On the evening of October 29, tens of thousands of people flocked to Itaewon area (Seoul, South Korea) to participate in the Halloween festival. This is the first Halloween event to be held again after 3 years, when Korea lifted many restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On the evening of October 29, a terrible jostling incident at a narrow, steep alley in Itaewon (South Korea) killed 156 people and injured hundreds. Most of the victims were young people in their twenties.
The incident is also one of the scariest disasters in South Korea since the Sewol ferry sinking in 2014 that killed 304 people, mostly high school students.
In the chaotic and desperate scene, many heartwarming images and stories were also recorded and spread on the social network of the country of ginseng.
Accordingly, while walking through the Itaewon area, the Ha sisters, both former or current nurses, heard screams. The scene quickly turned chaotic and the two realized their position was only a dozen feet away from the place of the stampede.
Desperate cries for doctors and nurses came from inside a nearby building, where 30-40 unconscious people were temporarily moved until rescuers could not reach the scene, according to Korea Times.
The Ha cousins immediately went inside and began performing CPR for the victims. Without a pen, the two inquirers borrowed a lipstick to mark, classifying patients by severity.
About 20 minutes later, the police created a larger space outside and moved the patient there. Together with other paramedics, firefighters and civilians, the sisters performed CPR for 40 to 50 people over three hours.
Mr. Jang, 62, living in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province is still heartbroken when he remembers what happened on the evening of October 29 in Itaewon, where his daughter almost lost her life when she went to play with friends.
That night, he suddenly received a phone call from his daughter. "Dad, everyone around me is gone," she sobbed.
Not long after, she sent Mr. Jang a message while at the Itaewon police station.
"I almost died, my leg seems to be broken. There was a stampede in Itaewon, I was pushed too on the way home. Dad help me, I'm scared."
Mr. Jang immediately took a taxi to find his daughter. However, the roads in Itaewon were blocked off, preventing traffic from passing. In the end, he had to run about 1.5 km to reach Itaewon police station.
Seeing his daughter in pain, unable to call a car at that time, Mr. Jang had no choice but to carry the child and run for kilometers to find a taxi. However, the father and son were unlucky even though they were exhausted.
Finally, the two met a couple in their 30s who gave them a hitchhiking and took them to a nearby emergency room at Hallym University Medical Center, Yeouido.
However, the place was also packed with patients transferred from Itaewon. After asking for Jang's whereabouts, the couple continued to take the father and son to another emergency room near his house.
Thanks to timely help, Jang's daughter was treated and the situation stabilized again. The hospital said his daughter suffered kidney damage and her right leg was pinched.
In the midst of the tragedy, many other heartwarming stories have also been spread on Korean social networks. It was the people who tried to save the victims by lifting them up the stairs near the Hamilton Hotel, was a man dressed in Santa Claus costume who shouted to stop people from entering the alley.
"Very disappointed that necessary medical equipment and rescue workers were unable to reach the scene quickly due to traffic congestion and large crowds. I hope similar tragedies never happen again." nurse Ha expressed.
