After the success of "The Glory" and most recently " Queen of Tears," actor Park Sung Hoon has become the most sought-after name on Korean screens.
In "Queen of Tears," Park Sung Hoon impressed as the villain Yoon Eun Sung. The character makes many viewers remember with a cruel personality, constantly hindering the main male-female couple.
However, in an interview on May 1, the star born in 1985 surprised many people by suddenly revealing his poor background. Park Sung Hoon said, "In fact, I didn't grow up in a rich family. My father used to work in a bank, but after he retired because of the IMF crisis, the family was extremely difficult. When I was in high school, I didn't get any support other than transportation expenses and didn't even have money to buy hamburgers when I went to the movies with us. I had to sit alone on the stairs just waiting for my friend."
The star also said that during his enlistment he did not dare to apply for leave. Because each time, his family had to spend 5,000 won while his parents at home at that time could only afford to eat with kimchi to survive the day. Early in his career as an actor, Park Sung Hoon earned about 50,000 won (more than 900,000 VND) a year acting in theater plays.
He and his friends rented a semi-basement motel room like in the movie Parasite to save money. "When the rainy season comes, the sink will be full of water. For fear of electric shock, we had to pour water from the sink into the trash. In winter, we soak cotton blankets to absorb rainwater and then pour it out," the actor added.
Despite going through many difficulties, Park Sung Hoon said he was always proud of his family. He regularly updates news, shares career achievements in the family's common chat group. The star recalled, "I often share articles about being casting or getting compliments in a family chat room. And within 30 seconds, Dad shared it with his relatives with a proud feeling. When I was acting, my brother-in-law gave me pocket money. Recently, when they came to Seoul, I bought beef for a treat. I've also sent them pocket money every month for the past three years. I'm happy with those moments."
Park Sung Hoon's sharing touched many people when he went through many hardships to reap the sweet fruits he is today. However, the actor also revealed that he actually did not receive any more advertising contracts after Queen of Tears because the character he played was hated too much. He also hopes the success of the film gives him the opportunity to play better characters in the future.
It can be said that Park Sung Hoon has found a "gold mine" for his career when he succeeds with villain roles. Possessing a masculine appearance, sharp eyes, and cold temperament, Park Sung Hoon easily transforms into mysterious and dangerous villains.
Explaining Park Sung Hoon's brilliance through villain roles, the audience said that it was the delicate acting, the deep transformation and charismatic charisma in the two films that helped him conquer all levels of the character's emotions, from cruel, cruel to pitiful, tragedy.
Besides, the roles that Sung Hoon takes on are built by the screenwriter in a multidimensional way, with many layers of emotions, both pitiful and reprehensible.
In the near future, Park Sung Hoon will continue to take on another villain role in "Tropical Night."
In this film, he played Mansu, an addict and drug dealer. Therefore, in order to play the role, Sung Hoon had to try to lose 10kg, which made him noticeably thinner. "Once again, my 'villain era' began," the comedic actor shared.
After "Tropical Night," Park Sung Hoon will have another big project â the second season of his blockbuster "Squid Game," which is scheduled to air later this year.
"I was called Jae Jun, then Eun Sung. So next, I hope I can be called by my character's name again in Squid Game," the actor said.
