The "mathematical genius" monk is completely married, seeing love as a kind of practice

Not long ago, Liu Zhiyu – the famous Chinese mathematical genius caused a stir, when he announced his continuation after 12 years of practice. Most recently, he said he was married.

According to Jiupai News, Liu won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2006 and was recognized as a genius by Peking University before the entrance exam.

4 years later, after completing all the modules at this school, holding a diploma, Lieu decided to devote himself to Buddhism and became a monk at Longquan Temple (outside Beijing), despite receiving a full scholarship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).

At that time, the young man said he chose to follow Buddhism because he wanted to explore his heart, instead of continuing with mathematics - the path to loneliness. This bold decision of Lieu surprised and talked about many people.

However, in 2018, the "math genius" retired from the temple because he felt that life here was very different from what he imagined, interpersonal relationships were even more complicated than at school. On top of that, Liu Zhiyu's master was involved in a scandal that caused him to collapse his trust.

After leaving, Lieu traveled extensively and chose to resume at the end of 2022. "I entered Buddhism because I wanted to explore my mind. After going to the monastery, I noticed that my mind was closer to the masses. I really want to help others through psychology," he said.

Next, Liu opened a health and psychiatric therapy center. In particular, he regularly hosts livestreams to share contemplations about life that attract viewers.

At that time, the information that "mathematical genius" returned to secular life made the online community "wake up", especially netizens of billions of people. In an interview in late December 2023, Lieu once again surprised the public by r.evealing she was married.

The two had known each other since he was a monk, but had not spoken to each other at the time. After completion, the couple met and interacted more, so they gradually developed feelings. "She's the only person I've ever dated," Lieu said.

The wife (who was asked to remain anonymous) taught the "mathematical genius" how to be a good husband, such as teaching him how to choose gifts accordingly. Lieu confessed that initially, he bought his wife completely outdated clothes and shoes, but now, he knows how to choose useful gifts to give.

"She understands and fully supports me. I can share all the joys and sorrows with her," he said. In addition, the secular monk also changed his opinion about not having children, because he was aware of the need to share important life decisions with his wife.

For Liu Zhiyu, love is also a kind of practice. Both of them, Buddhists, chanted and meditated together daily. Previously, his health was not good, but after meeting his "partner", his condition gradually improved.

Despite returning to secular life and getting married, the once-famous "mathematical genius" continues to follow the basic principles of Buddhism, such as no meat, no lying and humility.

Recently, Lieu Tri Vu published a book sharing the knowledge and experiences he gained as a monk to help people find enlightenment in daily life.

At the age of 35, he is satisfied with his current life. "I would give it an 8 out of 10 to judge my life; minus 2 points for being too busy. I'm a normal person. I aspire to be true to myself and hope people will accept this version of me," Lieu said.
