As a famous businessman with many contributions to Vietnamese football, Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc of Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) is also known for his controversial statements and bold decisions in the fields of business and football.

Mr. Duc was once the richest person in the stock market in 2008-2009 with a wallet of thousands of billions of VND, when Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong had not yet returned to the country. After falling in rank and facing difficulties during the real estate downturn in 2011-2014, Mr. Duc announced that he would abandon the real estate sector and switch to rubber plantation.

At that time, Mr. Duc said, "If you sell your house, you have to plant rubber trees" and believed that from 2014 onwards, the annual profit would reach 450 million USD. HAGL invested a large amount of mone.y, up to tens of thousands of billions of VND, in this field and held hundreds of thousands of hectares of land, both domestically and internationally. However, the price of rubber plummeted from 5,000 USD/ton to 1,650 USD/ton in 2016, causing HAGL to bear a huge debt.

Another very different concept of Mr. Duc is: "Working hard is not for mone.y". He has no shortage of mone.y, "I can spend it comfortably for three generations and still not run out. In 2016, Mr. Duc said, "If we don't have cows this year, we will still raise cows." However, after 2 years of bumper crops, in 2018, HAGL switched to fruit trees and reduced the number of cows.

Recently, after selling the sugar cane sector, abandoning rubber and focusing on fruit trees (mainly bananas) and pig farming, Mr. Duc confidently said: "If I am second, no one is first."
