Nguyen Minh Triet - TDDC athlete dies at the age of 18: Cancer mother, breadwinner

Having suffered a serious injury while training, Nguyen Minh Triet (18 years old) - athlete of the Vietnam Young Gymnastics Team (TDDC) did not survive after 6 months of treatment, closing his unfinished sports dreams and ambitions.

In November 2023, at the Nhon National Sports Training Center (Hanoi), Nguyen Minh Triet during training performed a flip two rounds later but unfortunately landed with his head into the foam pit, resulting in a very serious injury to the neck area and paralysis of the limbs.

Coach Hou Trung Linh (who directly trained Triet in the Army and the national youth gymnastics team) recalled: "On 10-11, Triet and the athletes practiced at Zone B gymnasium, Nhon Center with guaranteed conditions as usual.

At that time, I was doing free exercise, acrobatics in the sucking hole - a very safe position for athletes to practice. When he landed, Triet landed with his head in the sucking hole. This situation left me traumatized.

According to the coach, the accident that Minh Triet unfortunately encountered is very rare for a gymnast. To perform a difficult movement in regular gymnastics must undergo 1 year of training. First you have to practice at the acrobatic line with the sucker pit and then get on the mat. Previously, Nguyen Minh Triet also successfully performed this move many times, even recording the clip to send to his family to show off to his parents.

Minh Triet also once asked the teacher to go to the mat to perform but was not allowed because the coach wanted Minh Triet to perform masterfully and steadily and then calculate the time to enter the new tournament on the mat.

At Bach Mai hospital, Minh Triet was operated on, treated for myeloplegia, collapsed pneumonia. However, doctors diagnosed the 18-year-old athlete as unlikely to recover. The Hanoi National Sports Training Center took care of all the costs of Minh Triet's surgery as prescribed. The Department of Physical Training and Sports, the Vietnam Gymnastics Federation and athletes and coaches also called for generosity to support Minh Triet.

By April 2024, Minh Triet will be transferred to Thanh Nhan hospital. He continued treatment in the best condition in the hope of recovery, but unfortunately did not survive.

It is known that Nguyen Minh Triet was born on October 20, 2006, is an athlete under the management of the Army unit. As a gymnast, Triet has an ideal height of 1.72m and is a special talent of Army gymnastics.

Minh Triet has been doing gymnastics since he was 7-8 years old, now more than 10 years. He is passionate about sports, trained in the Army unit, then in 2018 was promoted to the National Youth Gymnastics Team at the National Sports Training Center (Hanoi). Triet is expected to be able to continue the achievements of his predecessors.

Nguyen Minh Triet was the U12, U13, U14, U15 champion in freestyle gymnastics at the national youth championships in previous years. At the IX National Athletic Congress in 2022, Nguyen Minh Triet also contributed to winning the bronze medal in the men's team event for the Army delegation.

Before the accident during training, Minh Triet also talked to him about his dream of striving for the national team because next year is the end of the age to play in the youth league system. In addition, Triet is only a few months away from graduating from high school when he is currently in grade 12.

"Teachers and students confide in each other regularly and I also encourage Triet a lot to realize his dream of going to the national team, as well as pursuing cultural studies. Having been with you for the past 10 years, I know everything about you. Triet has a difficult family situation, so he tries hard, works hard and makes efforts in training. Just a few months ago, teammates, teachers and students congratulated me when I made the move, but an unfortunate accident happened," said coach Hou Trung Linh.

Minh Triet's family has 4 siblings, although Triet is the third child, he is the economic and spiritual breadwinner for the whole family. The athlete's father is retired, working as a security guard every day. The friend's mother had cancer.

Triet's older brother had an accident involving electricity as a child, so he is now unable to work, and Triet's younger sister is only 5 years old. Every month on the team, Triet can go home for 1-2 days with his family. The whole house in the room is only 16m2 in Hoang Mai district. No matter how much salary there is in the team, Triet brings back to support his family.

Over the past 6 months, Minh Triet's family and coaches of Vietnam National Gymnastics Team, Army Sports ... always stand by Triet's side to take care of everything for his friend. However, the miracle did not happen.

Minh Triet's passing has left mourning in the hearts of his family, relatives and TDDC Vietnam. "This is a huge loss for TDDC Vietnam. Now we just wish Triet to rest in peace after a long time of fighting," said Mr. Hou Trung Linh, coach of Minh Triet in the Army gymnastics team and national team.
