Red Rain: Behind the scenes of the 600 billion blockbuster, the "huge" crew, revealing the historical footage

People's Artist Ly Thai Dung revealed many behind-the-scenes stories, calling "Red Rain" the biggest challenge of his career with dangerous scenes, the crew devoted themselves to creating a historical masterpiece.

Owning 4 awards for excellent cinematography at the Vietnam Film Festival, Ly Thai Dung is considered the "golden hand" of the war – historical film line. However, when entering the Red Rain project, he was still overwhelmed by the huge scale and high challenge of the film. After 81 days of continuous work on the set, the cinematographer called this the most difficult project in his career, but also the greatest source of pride. "From the beginning, I believed that Red Rain would be a huge success," he shared.

According to Ly Thai Dung, the history of cinema has proven that filming underwater is the biggest challenge, followed by filming children and animals. The red rain almost all of the scenes took place on the river, many segments were still at night, which made the crew's work complicated. The Thach Han River with its fast water and dangerous depth, forced the film crew to erect a steel mesh floor system 150 m long, 10 m wide, submerged 1-1.5 m under the water surface, both ensuring the safety of the actors and serving the river jumping scenes.

To illuminate the entire vast landscape on the river and in the city, the crew installed two 100 kW generator sets on both sides of the bank, and four 50 m high cranes with main and auxiliary lights. Even though there are up to 40 employees in the camera and lighting crews, the workload is still a big challenge.

The weather in Quang Tri also causes great difficulties. During the 81 days of filming, there were only two sunny days, the rest were continuous rain with temperatures of 13–15°C. Actors must wear summer costumes to ensure historicity, while the crew works continuously for 12–16 hours a day. Ly Thai Dung admitted that if there were two more weeks, things would be lighter, but all risks were limited thanks to careful preparation and putting the safety of the actors first.

The fire and explosion scenes are carried out under the supervision of the engineers, with a clear safety zone and only when everything is absolutely guaranteed to explode. The scenes near the character are also coordinated by Thai experts, using special explosives that do not pose a danger to the actors.

Sharing about the opportunity to come to Red Rain, Ly Thai Dung said that he was familiar with the State's war films, so the acceptance was not surprising. When reading the script, he was immediately convinced by the tight and attractive story, and considered this a valuable opportunity to collaborate with director Dang Thai Huyen.

One of his memorable memories is the opening scene with the people running away, where the main characters meet. The scene had about 1,000 participants, the crew had to prepare thousands of meals and set up field tents. These efforts reflect the enthusiasm of the entire crew, making the scene vivid and realistic.

When Red Rain broke box office records, Ly Thai Dung emphasized that from the moment he read the script, he believed in the success of the film. The key factor is a tight, attractive story, combined with the enthusiasm of the crew to bring the best footage. The box office achievement marks an important turning point for the revolutionary war film series, which is often considered a "gift film" with few audiences.
