With a revenue of 551.4 billion VND in just 2 weeks, "Red Rain" has officially usurped the throne of "Mai", becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in history. Before this great success, Tran Thanh and Ly Hai did an unexpected thing together, creating a strong reaction from fans.
September 7 entered the history of Vietnamese cinema when the film Red Rain officially surpassed Tran Thanh's Mai to become the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time. Specifically, after 17 days of premiere, Red Rain recorded an impressive revenue of up to 552 billion VND, beating the record of 551.2 billion VND that Mai set after 41 days of screening.
This is an unprecedented thing for the war film genre, a genre that is considered picky about the audience and difficult to achieve high sales. The success of Red Rain has completely changed the situation of the Vietnamese box office, proving that quality and in-depth works can still conquer the hearts of the public. The film is produced by the People's Army Cinema, inspired by the event of 81 days and nights of resilient fighting to protect Quang Tri Ancient Citadel in 1972, with the participation of famous actors such as People's Artist Tran Luc and Artist Trong Hai.
The attraction of the film has created a real earthquake. Many movie lovers have visited the homepage of Box Office Vietnam, an independent box office observer, to update information. Traffic spikes, more than 100 times more than on weekdays, making the website overloaded and inaccessible. On the official homepage, Box Office Vietnam had to announce a temporary redirect, showing the extraordinary influence of the film.
Congratulations from opponents, people who are submissive, those who are falsely labeled
Immediately after Red Rain set a new record, two of the "box office kings" of Vietnamese cinema made a move to attract attention. Tran Thanh, the director of the movie Mai, posted an article on his personal page to congratulate Red Rain. He wrote: "Congratulations to Red Rain on becoming the top 1 film at the box office". This congratulation shows his admiration for the cinematic work that is "making it rain and wind" at the Vietnamese box office.
However, Tran Thanh's post quickly caused controversy. Despite receiving more than 100,000 interactions, many people think that he is "faking it" when congratulating a movie that has "usurped" him.
In contrast to Tran Thanh, director Ly Hai of Flip Face 7 also posted a similar congratulatory status line: "Congratulations to the film Red Rain Top 1 at the Vietnamese box office". Ly Hai is also one of the top filmmakers, with Flip Face 7 reaching a revenue of 482 billion VND, becoming the second most popular Vietnamese film in history. Li Hai's congratulations received a positive reaction again, showing the public's respect for his martial spirit.
When the victory doesn't just belong to one movie
The different reactions of the online community to Tran Thanh and Ly Hai have reflected the complexity in how the public perceives celebrities. While Ly Hai's congratulations are considered respect among professionals, Tran Thanh's wishes are scrutinized more closely, perhaps because Mai has been surpassed by Red Rain. However, both directors have shown civility, something that is worthy of respect in the art world.
