Although adapted from a novel by writer Chu Lai , the movie "Red Rain" lacks 6 details that make many fans of the original work regret. Even so, the film still achieved success on the box office track.
The original work once resonated with its psychological depth, fiercely depicting war and human fate. When stepping on the big screen, the script is forced to shorten and rearrange many details to match the pace of cinematic storytelling. It is this difference that creates a strong wave of debate between novel fans and mass audiences.
1. Ta's ending disappointed the audience
In the film, Ta is built as a Thanh Hoa farmer, older and straightforward. He sacrificed himself when he saved Sen in his madness. The scene where he collapsed suddenly made the audience stunned and regretful.
However, in the story, Ta fought until the last moment, sacrificing himself when he was shot by an enemy soldier, who was also spared Cuong's life. That departure is both tragic and creates a psychological knot for Cuong. The simplification on the film makes the audience feel that they have lost an important layer of meaning.
2. Lotus: Crazy or fake crazy?
In the movie version, Sen goes crazy after the shock of the battlefield, portraying the mental pain left by the war, even if it does not bleed, it is still a wound that is difficult to heal.
In the original work, Sen pretended to be crazy to avoid responsibility, even to stink. Later, he woke up and accompanied his teammates. Many people consider the way Sen is built on the film to be more "beautiful", easy to create sympathy with the audience, even though the image loses its inherent complexity.
3. Tu became a symbol of youth
The movie introduces Tu as a student who has not received his diploma in time to go to battle. Tu was innocent and lively, but he was the first to make a sacrifice, leaving sorrow for the audience. In the story, Tu had a shy beginning, having to go through a maturation process to integrate with his teammates to fight shoulder to shoulder. The change helps the film shorten the plot, emphasizing the tragedy of war when youth has not yet had time to bloom and has faded.
4. Cut-out details cause regret
In the original work, there was a passage where the soldier decided to bite the two ends of the telephone cord to maintain contact, accepting to sacrifice his body for a noble purpose. This is an episode that is considered extremely haunting, once exploited in the movie "The smell of burning grass". But in "Red Rain", the film has omitted, only keeping the scene of Dr. Le receiving an important call. Although it is regrettable, the cutting of this detail is said to ensure the age limit of 13, avoiding causing a feeling of savagery in viewers.
5. Cuong's death: Reducing the tragedy
In the movie, Cuong died after the confrontation with Quang, the two spared each other's lives, but in the end he was secretly shot by Quang's teammates. This is a tragic enough ending. It is known that in the story, the scene of Hong hugging Cuong's body, listening to him worrying about his mother, is full of love and pain, making it difficult for readers to forget. The film has simplified the plot, possibly to temper the audience's emotions, but it loses the tragic climax that is the highlight of the novel.
6. Meeting between two mothers
The film closes with the image of Quang and Cuong's two mothers lighting incense for the grave of their child â one is a martyr in the middle of the "arms" of his comrades; One was a soldier on the edge of the front line, until he died, he was still lonely.
In the novel, the two mothers meet directly in front of Quang's grave. Cuong's mother asked for permission to light incense for Quang. Small but meaningful details, as an affirmation of the spirit of national reconciliation. The fact that it is not put on the screen makes a part of readers feel that there is a lack of depth compared to the original.
