In recent years, people in Trung Khanh village, Lam Trung Thuy commune, Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province have been worried about the increasing number of cancer cases being detected in the same residential area.
This situation has caused this place to be labeled a "cancer village", becoming a constant obsession for the local community.
A new report aired on Ha Tinh TV with the title "The haunting 'cancer village' in Duc Tho" recorded the current situation in Trung Khanh village, reflecting people's concerns about the unusual increase in cancer cases, mainly lung cancer, in the past 5-6 years.
"Someone in the house avoids cold air"
According to Ha Tinh TV reporters, when arriving at Trung Khanh village, it is not difficult to see signs in front of houses with the words: "There is a family member who is avoiding the cold, we hope everyone understands. Thank you." These signs partly reflect the presence of disease in every house in this locality.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Lan, Head of Trung Khanh village, confirmed: "In the past 5 years, there have been quite a few people in the village with cancer, causing a great impact on the psychology of the people."
Mr. Lan said that most of the villagers make their living from farming. With limited income, regular health check-ups are a luxury for many households. Therefore, most cancer cases are only detected when the disease is in its late stages.
"In recent years, the number of people with the disease has increased rapidly. Most of the cases detected are in the severe stage, requiring long-term treatment and greatly affecting family life as well as the community," Mr. Lan shared.
In the same area, many people got sick.
The case of Ms. Phan Thi Le, a lung cancer patient in Trung Khanh village, was mentioned in the report. According to the story, Ms. Le discovered she had pneumonia in 2022. Despite receiving treatment from provincial to central hospitals, her condition did not improve. It was not until two years later that she was diagnosed with lung cancer. At the same time, many people in her family's neighborhood also suffered from the same disease.
"Trung Khanh village is quite large, but in the area where I live, there are already nearly ten people with cancer. Some have passed away, some are undergoing treatment," said Ms. Le.
The disease situation does not stop at a few individual cases. According to the report, in the Nuong Rong residential area in Trung Khanh village alone - where nearly 20 households live - 11 people were diagnosed with cancer in less than two years, from the beginning of 2024 to mid-2025.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Duong, a local resident, said: "Every two houses, one person is affected, and in some houses, two people are affected. Everyone is worried."
It is noteworthy that most of the cancer cases here are lung cancer. Recently, the locality has also recorded some cases of thyroid cancer. Not only in Trung Khanh village, this phenomenon has begun to appear in some other villages in Lam Trung Thuy commune.
Local authorities recommend environmental assessment
Faced with this unusual development, local authorities have taken steps to call for attention from higher-level professional agencies.
Mr. Dang Sy Chien, Vice Chairman of Lam Trung Thuy Commune People's Committee, confirmed: "There are many people with cancer in the commune, especially in Trung Khanh village. Through monitoring the situation, the Party Committee and local authorities hope that all levels and sectors will pay attention, have time to survey and assess the environmental impact... to find the cause, help people prevent it, ensure their lives, health and stable economic development".
Although there has been no official conclusion about the cause of the large number of cancer cases in Trung Khanh village, the sudden increase in a short period of time, along with the common features of the disease, has made people uneasy.
At the end of the report, Ha Tinh TV Newspaper emphasized: "The discovery of many people with cancer in a village or commune has made Lam Trung Thuy residents worried. While waiting for the authorities to intervene to find the cause, people need to regularly monitor their health to minimize the risks of possible diseases."
Warning signs of cancer
According to recommendations from Cancer Research UK, people need to pay special attention to unusual signs of the body, thereby being able to detect the disease early and increase the possibility of effective treatment.
Some typical signs include: persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, persistent cough, shortness of breath, unexplained pain or swelling, unusual lumps, changes in bowel or bladder habits, slow-healing wounds, unusual changes in the breast or skin, new moles or changes in existing moles.
The organization also recommends that if any of the above signs are detected, people should go to a medical facility for timely examination and screening.
