The wave of TikTokers encroaching on cinema has become a topic of debate in recent times, as more and more content creators appear densely on the big screen, even taking on important roles instead of just stopping at cameo roles as before.
As noted, the audience is no stranger to famous faces on social networks participating in theatrical film projects, from colorful small roles to character lines that directly affect the storyline.
The case of MisThy or TikToker Ms. Phien is often mentioned as a typical example of this trend. Ms. Phien has continuously appeared in many film projects, from Tran Thanh's films to works directed by Le Thanh Son or Duc Thinh. Not only stopping at transient roles, some TikTokers are now also participating in roles of significant duration, showing a marked shift from a "network phenomenon" to the field of professional acting.
However, the increasing appearance of TikTokers in Vietnamese movies also leads to many mixed opinions. A part of the audience thinks that this is a way to do it in line with market trends, when producers take advantage of the available attraction from social networks to promote films, especially with young audiences - who are easily attracted to trending content. Dialogues with "trend" colors, exaggerated expressions or familiar comedy style of TikTokers can help movies spread faster on digital platforms.
On the other hand, many opinions expressed concern about the quality of acting. The fact that some TikTokers have not been well-trained but still take on big roles makes many people question the criteria for choosing actors. In fact, not everyone can transform social media attraction into real acting ability on the screen.
Industry experts see this issue in a more multi-dimensional way. They think that TikTokers' participation in cinema is not a negative thing if they are placed in the right position and have professional control. In the context of the rapidly changing entertainment market, taking advantage of someone who has a large available following is a sensible communication strategy. However, the core factor of cinema is still the quality of content and acting, so if the "online face" is abused and the ability is ignored, the film may lose its artistic value and trust from the audience.
It is worth noting that the line between promotion and art is increasingly blurred. When TikTokers are included in movies for the purpose of creating media effects, their role is sometimes no longer purely serving content but also aiming to spread on social networks. This makes some works considered "tasteful" instead of focusing on the quality of the script and acting.
Besides, the story of TikTokers "invading" Vietnamese movies also reflects the change in the way the entertainment industry operates. If in the past, the path to becoming an actor was often associated with professional training and the process of accumulating experience, now, fame on digital platforms can become a "fast ticket" to enter cinema. This opens up opportunities for many new faces, but at the same time poses a challenge in maintaining professional standards.
Some argue that instead of outright opposition, a more balanced view is needed. TikTokers who seriously pursue acting, hone their skills and work with a professional attitude can still create positive surprises. On the contrary, if they only rely on their existing reputation without investment in the profession, they are unlikely to survive for a long time in the harsh competitive environment of cinema.
In general, the wave of TikTokers participating in Vietnamese movies is an unavoidable trend in the era of strong social networks. The problem is not in the way they appear, but in the way they are used and their ability to meet the requirements of the profession. When the commercial and artistic elements are properly balanced, this can become a new direction to help Vietnamese cinema get closer to young audiences, while still maintaining the quality necessary for sustainable development.
