After a series of psychological and family images, the movie Mang me di bo suddenly "changed the atmosphere" with a behind-the-scenes vlog filmed in Korea. Hong Dao, Tuan Tran and a cast of Vietnamese stars filmed in Korea as if they were... on vacation.
Accordingly, made in a close, everyday style, the clip reveals the fun filming atmosphere of the Vietnamese stars in the chilly weather of the land of kimchi. The three main actors Hong Dao, Tuan Tran and Juliet Bao Ngoc had a memorable working time during a month in Korea, from mid-October to mid-November 2024.
Not only did they learn how to hang dried fish for good luck according to traditional Korean rituals, the crew here also took care of every meal and sleep to ensure the health and spirit during the filming process. For just one scene, the crew prepared everything, from heaters to... blankets to keep the actors warm.
Notably, in a scene of eating black bean noodles, the "on-screen mother and son" couple Hong Dao - Tuan Tran had to eat 7 bowls of noodles in a row to complete the segment. Hong Dao humorously shared: "I don't know if we're filming or having a noodle eating competition." Meanwhile, Tuan Tran laughed sadly because he got so into character that the audience watching the vlog thought they were watching a culinary show and not a film set.
Not stopping there, to integrate into the working environment in Korea, Vietnamese artists also showed off their Korean skills, making viewers laugh because it was so cute. Tuan Tran spoke Korean like a native, while Hong Dao thanked the crew with simple but sincere Korean sentences. On the other hand, Korean actor Jung Il Woo also tried to mumble a few sentences in Vietnamese, contributing to creating a backstage atmosphere full of laughter and connection.
A Vietnamese-Korean co-production of the psychological and family genre, Mang Me Di Bo was directed and written by Mo Hong-jin. The film revolves around the tragic fate of Hoan (played by Tuan Tran) and Mrs. Le Thi Hanh (played by Hong Dao) - a son who grew up in a lack of love, forced to personally take care of his mother with Alzheimer's disease.
Through the images and information revealed, the film gradually opens up slices of Hanh's mother's memories during the time she lived in Korea. This element promises to bring a cross-border story, containing emotional depth and many humane messages.
Director Mo Hong-jin shared: "After releasing the film Prisoner's Last Wish 2037 in 2022, I came to Vietnam for the first time in November and started to have feelings for this country. As a lover of family films, I wanted to tell a warm and humane story in Vietnam. In addition, I felt that the culture of this young country was developing very strongly, and I also wanted to accompany that flow."
Mang me di bo was developed entirely from the original script, painstakingly researched by Korean filmmakers and inspired by the people, life and culture of Vietnam. From the initial goal, the crew expected to create a Vietnamese-Korean collaboration that was close-knit and accessible to both domestic and international audiences.
Actor Tuan Tran said that this is the most mature role in his career so far. The character he plays has clear inner depth, reflecting emotional callousness when facing the traumas in life.
Having Tuan Tran draw the filmâs title by hand also had a special purpose â to preserve the roughness and naturalness in each stroke, just like the character he played. That simplicity became a symbol of the sincere and lingering feelings that a child has for his mother â which is also the spirit that the film wants to convey throughout.
"Just like the psychology of the character in the film, the first period of facing a lot of pain, and then in the end the character realizes the most precious and meaningful things. This painting brought me an indescribable feeling," Tuan Tran shared about the similarity between the character's emotions and his own when participating in the film.
The logo of Mang me di bo was also designed based on Tuan Tran's original handwriting. Yellow was chosen as the main color, symbolizing the half-remembered, faded but still haunting memories of the mother.
