After Ms. Phan Thi Mai and her husband â CEO of Mailisa Beauty Salon â were arrested, information about them and their facilities quickly attracted attention, especially Ms. Mai's strange actions on social networks before.
On November 21, the Department of Investigation Police on Corruption, Economic Crimes, and Smuggling (C03, Ministry of Public Security) announced that it had decided to prosecute and detain Ms. Phan Thi Mai - Director of Mailisa Beauty Salon System - and her husband, Mr. Hoang Kim Khanh, to investigate smuggling. The case is directly related to MK Skincare Company and many other units.
In addition to Ms. Mai and her husband, the investigation agency also prosecuted 6 other people, including: Tran Dan Phuong - Chief Accountant of MK Skincare Company; Nguyen Thi Ngoc Truc - Accountant; Vuong Phuong Nghi - Director of this company; Vo Hoai Son and Lu XueYi - employees of Khai Hoan Import Export Company Limited; Do Bich Thuy - the person who performed the money transfer service in Hanoi.
According to C03, from 2020 to 2024, Ms. Mai and her husband imported cheap cosmetics from China to Vietnam for consumption in the Mailisa system. However, these products did not meet standards and were not eligible for a Certificate of Free Sale (CFS) in China.
To legitimize the documents, this group is accused of colluding with some Chinese people to create fake contracts, changing the origin from "Guangzhou (China)" to "Hong Kong", from there applying for a CFS in Hong Kong and importing to Vietnam under the name of high-end goods. Thanks to the "made in Hong Kong" label, the products of the Mailisa system become attractive to buyers, creating trust and selling on the market at prices many times higher than the import price.
C03 said that with just three of the more than one hundred key products, the Mailisa system has illegally profited up to thousands of billions of dong. Up to now, the investigation agency has prosecuted eight defendants and is expanding the investigation into the violations of related organizations and individuals, and at the same time, seizing and freezing assets to ensure recovery for the State.
The case took place in the context of the Mailisa system becoming the center of attention after the police force simultaneously inspected all facilities on November 12. The next day, the official website of Mailisa was inaccessible. Instead of the usual interface, users only saw a black screen with the message: "The website will be back up soon. Thank you for your waiting!".
Notably, Mailisa's social media accounts are still active, continuing to post articles and interact with followers. Before the incident was announced, Ms. Mai's personal Facebook page also attracted attention with many "heartfelt letters" sent to relatives. On November 6, she sent a message to her biological mother; on November 7, she shared a message for her daughter-in-law; most recently, a post to her husband.
The flurry of posts filled with personal emotions has led many to question whether Ms. Mai had a premonition of the impending event. However, some say this is just the CEOâs usual style, who often shares philosophical and emotional family stories on social media.
Currently, C03 is continuing to investigate and clarify all related acts of individuals and organizations to strictly handle them according to the law, while ensuring the rights of buyers and recovering illegal assets for the State.
