Box Office Vietnam has begun releasing advance ticket sales figures for films released during the Lunar New Year holiday, attracting significant audience interest. However, on February 10th, Tran Thanh's film "Tho Oi" (Oh, Little Rabbit) recorded the lowest revenue among its competitors.
This information quickly spread on social media, leaving many viewers stunned. This is because, in recent years, Tran Thanh has almost become a "box office guarantee" every Tet holiday with a series of blockbuster films like "Nha Ba Nu," "Mai," and "Bo Tu Bao Thu." The sudden drop of "Tho Oi" to the bottom of the early ticket sales rankings has sparked much speculation.
Following a barrage of questions from fans, on the morning of February 11th, Tran Thanh officially spoke out on his personal page. He stated that the previously displayed revenue figures did not fully reflect the actual situation. "Some fans have been messaging me constantly asking about the Box Office figures, so I'd like to clarify that it's probably due to network lag, so the data hasn't been fully updated yet!" the director shared.
According to information released by Tran Thanh, as of the morning of February 11th, the advance ticket sales for "Tho Oi" had reached 349 million VND, with some theaters yet to update their data. Box Office Vietnam later adjusted the figures, showing Tran Thanh's film temporarily leading the race. At the same time, "Nha Ba Toi Mot Phong" earned 73 million VND, "Bau Vat Troi Cho" reached 34 million VND, and "Mui Pho Dat Tuoi" recorded approximately 10 million VND.
The dramatic changes in box office rankings in less than 24 hours demonstrate the exceptional level of audience interest in this year's Lunar New Year film season. At the same time, it reflects the influence of Tran Thanh – a name always associated with heated debates whenever a new project is released.
"Thỏ ơi" (Oh, Little Rabbit) is being introduced as Tran Thanh's next Lunar New Year film, continuing his string of previous successes. However, based on initial images and information, this work is expected to have a socio-psychological tone, with a more edgy and somewhat darker approach compared to his previous projects. This is considered a notable shift for the director, as he not only explores familiar family themes but also delves into the darker aspects of life.
However, the project also faced considerable controversy from the moment the cast was announced. Besides Tran Thanh in the central role, "Tho Oi" features many young faces such as Quoc Anh, Lyly, Phao, Vinh Dam, Van Mai Huong... The selection of a cast lacking acting experience has led some viewers to question the overall quality of the film. Many opinions suggest that, with a somewhat heavy subject matter, giving opportunities to inexperienced actors could be a "double-edged sword".
Furthermore, the 2026 Lunar New Year film season sees the participation of many formidable competitors. "My Father's House, One Room" marks Truong Giang's directorial debut, exploring family stories and generational conflicts in the context of an old apartment building, with a relatable theme that easily resonates with the audience. Meanwhile, "Heaven's Gift" attracts attention with the reunion of Phuong Anh Dao and Tuan Tran after the success of "Mai" (2024), offering a romantic comedy with a series of awkward situations. Minh Beta's "The Scent of Pho" continues to explore the conflict between tradition and modernity in Vietnamese families, a familiar theme but one that still offers ample creative potential.
Tran Thanh's film is a tough challenge for Tet 2026, Truong Giang officially issues a challenge.
