Beautiful, educated, virtuous, but Nam Phuong Queen had a difficult life when her husband, former emperor Bao Dai, was engrossed in chasing butterflies, leaving her to worry about her children alone. Still, she kept her pride.
Queen Nam Phuong (1914 - 1963), her real name is Nguyen Huu Thi Lan, was the last empress of the Nguyen Dynasty. She came from a wealthy Catholic family in the South and also enjoyed a French education from a young age. According to historical records, the Emperor and Empress met at a party, they fell in love (according to the arrangement of the French) and the wedding took place.
The wedding ceremony of Emperor Bao Dai and Queen Nam Phuong, took place in March 1934. This is both the wedding ceremony of the Emperor and the Empress, as well as the ceremony to establish the young girl Nguyen Huu Thi Lan as the Queen's Main Palace.
The following years were sweet and happy days when the two of them had 5 children in turn: Eastern Palace, Crown Prince Bao Long, Prince Bao Thang, Queen Phuong Lien, Queen Phuong Dung, and Queen Mother. Phuong Mai.
The whole family of 7 lives together in Kien Trung Palace - the only palace built in the European style in Hue Citadel - with full modern amenities; eat at the same table as a family (according to the previous rule, no one was allowed to sit on the same tray with the Emperor, including the Empress Dowager or the Empress).
Nam Phuong's first tear was witnessed by Pham Khac Hoe (former general secretary of the emperor's office) on the day the former emperor Bao Dai left his family to Hanoi to work as a consultant at the invitation of the Government. The former emperor "the corners of his eyes were a little wet, but his mouth was still smiling, picked up Phuong Dung to kiss again". Nam Phuong's eyes widened, "looking at her as if she wanted to hold her husband, but he did not turn back".
Immediately after leaving Hanoi, Bao Dai continuously had extramarital relationships. He had an old man and wife relationship with Mong Diep. After that, he publicly had a relationship with dancer Ly Le Ha.
Dancer Ly Le Ha - King Bao Dai's mistress - has no clear photo recorded in history, only a blurry black and white picture. In history, she is a great beauty, won the title of the first Miss Vietnam and was an inspiration for many contemporary artists.
After officially being Bao Dai's lover, Ly Le Ha and Bao Dai always go together. The book "Bao Dai or the last days of the Kingdom of Annam" records that: Bao Dai had a public relationship with Ly Le Ha, walking night and night, eating, drinking, going to places to eat and dance, regardless The petitions of people around are living austere and frugally.
During that time, Nam Phuong knew everything. Bao Dai still writes letters to his wife, to... ask for money. Although she really wanted to go to the North to reunite with her husband, the queen stayed in Hue because she was afraid that it would cost the state more while the government was poor, worried about hundreds of things, and moreover, did not want to make the happy former emperor return. into suffering and oppression. She sent him the amount he requested.
After 1946, Bao Dai left Vietnam and lived in exile in Hong Kong with Ly Le Ha. After applying for asylum in Hong Kong, at first Bao Dai had to live off of Ly Le Ha's savings. Daniel Granclément wrote: "The money he threw on the tables or paid for the room was paid by his mistress Ly Le Ha. She had to open the safe and give him all the savings of a half-upper girl dancing. , the amount of money up to several hundred silver thanks to the perseverance to accumulate".
At that time, Nam Phuong sent Ly Le Ha a handwritten letter, with gentle words but still showing his authority, without losing the style of a "suspecting mother".
"Dear sister Ly Le Ha. I live thousands of miles away from the former emperor, but I know that you are taking care of the former emperor with all your heart in Hong Kong. I pray that history will not let go of the former emperor in the future. Emperor, we will meet again. Duc Tu Cung Empress Dowager and I will forever be grateful to you. Sister Nam Phuong!"
The letter is only 66 words, very moderate, expressing the style of the Mother of the world. But looking deeply into each line, one can see the deep hidden love that the Empress has sent. Apparently, she wanted to tell her husband's mistress that she knew very well what her husband was doing and with whom. But partly because of the distance, partly because of the different hierarchy, she did not take action to make a jealous judgment.
It is a letter showing mature and proper behavior, concise but expressing the idea of giving up and entrusting her husband to the love rival, expecting the love enemy to take care of her man. It is also a break with the husband who has five children with his knees and hands - who has sworn to be a wife and a husband forever with her.
However, Nam Phuong emphasized that "we will see each other again", as if to remind the mistress to know her position, and to know how to behave properly, do not do anything to damage the honor of the royal family. .
On the other hand, with a woman's reason, Queen Nam Phuong knew that no matter what, this letter was also "watched" by the former emperor. In the name of a royal family, on behalf of both her mother-in-law, Empress Duc Tu Cung, "I will always be grateful to you", it may also be a hint that, even if she "gives" her husband to Le Ha, she will also remember the story. even in the grave?
It is not clear how much the letter affected Ly Le Ha's psyche, but many years later, she kept the letter as a very important memento of her life.
In mid-August 1947, Nam Phuong decided to leave Vietnam. She went to Hong Kong to meet her husband after two years of separation. At this time, married life is put first. Bao Dai's other lovers had to stay away at least for a while. But not long after that, she took her children from Hong Kong to France. At that time, she was 33 years old, but her beauty was still gorgeous, but no matter how much her husband was in love, she never filled the void in her heart with another man, she kept her dignity and core. his way even when he is no longer in office.
The "heavenly" love affair of dancer Le Ha and prince Bao Dai finally ended. Even though the dancer is beautiful, she is still not strong enough to hold the love king. Bao Dai left the beautiful girl of Ha Thanh dance village to continue his journey in search of new pink balls.
Queen Nam Phuong calmly lived her own life until she died at the age of 49 from heart disease. On the day of her funeral, former emperor Bao Dai was also absolutely absent.
