Anyone who has watched "Journey to the West" knows that Sun Wukong is one of the most legendary characters in the work. But not many people know that he was once a powerful god.
Anyone who has read "Journey to the West" knows that Tang Sanzang and his disciples are people of extraordinary origins. Although Tang Sanzang is a monk without magical powers, in his previous life he was actually Kim Thien Tu - the second disciple of Buddha Nhu Lai.
Meanwhile, Zhu Bajie was originally the Tianpeng Marshal, commanding over 80,000 marines in heaven. According to Taoist ranks, Tianpeng Marshal - had a very high position, was the leader of the Four Saints of the North Pole - one of the four most important Taoist guardian deities in heaven.
Unlike Zhu Bajie and Tang Seng, Sha Wujing was not reincarnated but was banished directly to the lower world. Sha Wujing was originally the great general of the Heavenly Court, but because he accidentally broke a glass cup, he was banished by the Jade Emperor to become a monster in Liu Sha River. As for Bai Long Ma, he was the third prince of the West Sea Dragon King, Ngao Liet. He committed a crime because he accidentally burned a pearl given to him by the Jade Emperor as a wedding gift.
At this point, many people will wonder if Sun Wukong had a previous life, and if so, who was this character in his previous life?
In fact, the mystery of Sun Wukong's life experience is hidden in the details of his birth. The original text says: "Perhaps since the stone was born, it has absorbed the sacred energy of heaven and earth, the essence of the sun and moon for a long time, so it is so spiritual. Inside the stone is a fairy fetus.
One day the rock split in two, giving birth to a round stone egg, as big as a sphere, which met the wind and turned into a stone monkey, complete with face, arms and legs. The stone monkey immediately learned to crawl and run, bowing to the four directions of the sky, startling even the God who was then ruling in Linh Tieu Palace with the fairies.
For a person with a strange birth like Sun Wukong, his previous life was certainly not simple. Regarding the round stone egg, the author once mentioned that when Sun Wukong caused trouble in the Heavenly Palace, it was a "round, bright" object with the power "to not burn in fire, nor sink in water".
There are some theories that say this is a "mani" pearl. In Buddhism, this pearl has the advantage of exorcising demons, settling in dirty muddy water, similar to Buddhist relics. This means that Sun Wukong's entity is actually a "mani" pearl.
Those who are knowledgeable about Buddhist relics know that this is a very rare object, only enlightened monks can possess it when they pass away. Another hypothesis is that this mani jewel is the jewel of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
But no matter how you say it, it cannot be separated from Buddhism. If Sun Wukong is really a reincarnation, then he might have been an enlightened monk in his previous life. The person in charge of reincarnation is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, so do you know who reincarnated as Sun Wukong? The answer is yes.
In the original, Sun Wukong once caused a ruckus in hell and erased life and deat.h. At that time, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva controlled a vast underworld, and he himself was a Buddha, so his strength was very great, more than enough to defeat a young wild monkey. However, he did not come forward to subdue Sun Wukong because he knew about his origin.
In "Journey to the West", the Supreme Elder Lord once had a story of "transforming into a fox and becoming a Buddha". The image of the Supreme Elder Lord before becoming a god is always considered to be the incarnation of Lao Tzu. Combined with the story of Lao Tzu's incarnation, it seems to be a metaphor showing that Sun Wukong was an accomplished monk with immeasurable merit and almost became a Buddha in his previous life.
So why was he reincarnated as Sun Wukong? This was not only a deliberate arrangement by the Buddha, but also the monk's past life. According to the above analysis, if Sun Wukong was truly an enlightened monk in his previous life, then the relics he transformed into after deat.h would naturally belong to Buddhism.
Because his achievements were not enough to become a Buddha, he could only continue his cultivation in the next life. Accompanying Tang Monk to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures was equivalent to the opportunity to become a Buddha. Of course, the path to becoming a Buddha for a person could not be that simple and would involve much suffering.
When Sun Wukong was born, the Tathagata placed him in the Water Curtain Cave. When Sun Wukong was still king of Flower Fruit Mountain, he received some advice from the older monkeys, such as going to see Master Bodhidharma to learn the way, taking the Ruyi Jingu from the dragon palace in the East China Sea, and canceling the book of life and deat.h in the underworld.
After arriving in the heavenly realm, Sun Wukong stole the elixir of life from the Supreme Elder Lord, stole the peach of immortality... Actually, everything had been arranged long ago. In the end, Sun Wukong was locked in the alchemy furnace by the Supreme Elder Lord and trained to have a pair of fiery golden eyes, making him even more invincible.
Finally, the Jade Emperor saw that there was no god in heaven that could compare to Sun Wukong, so he could only invite Tathagata Buddha. In this way, the Buddha's goal could be considered half achieved, and the Jade Emperor would probably never dare to loo.k dow.n o.n Buddhism again.
Next, Sun Wukong was imprisoned by Tathagata under the Five Elements Mountain for five hundred years, born from a rock, and now returned to the rock. Tathagata wanted him to return to his "mother's womb" to cultivate his nature, because he had arranged for him to protect Tang Sanzang and go to the West to worship Buddha and pray after five hundred years of imprisonment.
