After the MMA girl knocked out a tattooed guy in the apartment building's basement, this sport suddenly gained public attention. It is known that MMA (mixed martial arts) is no longer strange to the martial arts community in the world as well as in Vietnam.
Not only that, this type of martial art is becoming more and more popular among the public with tournaments worth billions of dollars. In Vietnam, MMA is not only an entertainment program, a sports competition but also attracts more and more people to practice it as a movement.
What is MMA?
MMA stands for "mixed martial arts". The name itself explains the nature of this martial art. In an MMA match, fighters are allowed to use standing strikes (punches, kicks, knees, elbows), throw their opponents to the floor and continue to attack or clinch them on the ground.
MMA is not a specific martial art with its own system of techniques and philosophy associated with cultural and historical elements such as karate, judo, taekwondo, muay... Therefore, MMA is only considered a form of combat, martial arts competition that blends the quintessence of many different martial arts to create the most comprehensive style.
However, today, as MMA has developed and perfected its rules, it is gradually being considered as an independent martial art that is studied and practiced in depth. More and more fighters are practicing MMA techniques from the beginning, rather than learning different martial arts and then combining them.
Who created MMA?
Modern MMA has been around since the 1990s, but the idea of âmixed martial artsâ has been around for thousands of years. There was a sport called Pankration (ancient Greek for âfull powerâ) that appeared in the ancient Olympics, and it involved punching, kicking, grappling, and grapplingâsimilar to MMA today. In China, the ancient version of mixed martial arts was described as a âthunder ring,â where fighters from different schools competed against each other.
1993 marked the official birth of modern mixed martial arts when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was born in the United States. This arena was promoted as a place where fighters "fight without rules". The first matches had almost no technical limitations, overwhelming the public and causing controversy. The UFC model and rules are considered the standard of modern MMA.
From 2001 onwards, the UFC adopted a unified set of rules, making MMA a legitimate sport. This increased safety control for MMA and the UFC, helping the sport to be more widely promoted.
To date, MMA has grown globally with hundreds of large and small tournaments. Leading organizations such as UFC, ONE Championship, Bellator are the birthplace of martial arts legends such as Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Amanda Nunes...
Common MMA Strikes
The appeal of MMA comes from the fact that fighters must be versatile and well-rounded, not just good at striking or grappling. This creates challenges and gives fighters many options in forming their own fighting style.
MMA's striking techniques include punches, kicks, knees and elbows... similar to boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, taekwondo. Fighters can throw hook punches, roundhouse kicks, flying knees... with great speed and force.
Takedowns are also a common move in MMA. Bringing an opponent to the mat and gaining the upper hand is considered one of the basic and effective tactics. Takedowns are techniques that are typical of wrestling and judo, using side kicks, hooks or chokes.
Once a fighter has taken their opponent to the mat, there are two possible scenarios. They can either continue striking, creating a âground and poundâ position, or use a choke to âfinishâ their opponent. MMA chokes are largely inspired by jujitsu â choking, arm-twisting, or locking the opponentâs joints to the point of forcing them to submit.
Why is MMA the most practical?
MMA is considered the most practical martial art. Basically, MMA was born from the spirit of fighting without rules and without technical limitations. MMA matches simulate self-defense situations as closely as possible. Therefore, MMA is considered a version of street martial arts. Fighters face a variety of threats and are also allowed to use any permitted techniques to respond.
In general, MMA fighters cannot master just one martial art. They need to master at least 3-4 skill systems including striking, grappling, ground fighting and comprehensive defense. This makes MMA more demanding in terms of expertise.
In addition, MMA does not develop in the direction of sport like many other martial arts (ie forming a strict system of technical rules and determining victory or defeat by points). MMA attacks aim to eliminate the opponent's fighting ability. This is what makes mixed martial arts attractive, with a high rate of knockout and submission.
