Recently, Professor Dr. Le Ngoc Thach - a visiting lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) sent a savings book of 1 billion VND to support the people of the North who are suffering heavy losses after Typhoon Yagi.
Professor Le Ngoc Thach revealed that his savings were saved from his retirement, teaching and writing money over many years. After seeing the news about the consequences of the recent floods on the people of the North, he decided to donate all of his savings, keeping the interest for other charity programs. Professor Le Ngoc Thach shared that his 1 billion VND is a lot for an individual but "just a grain of sand compared to the damage that the people of the North are suffering".
Professor Thach said that he currently lives alone so he does not spend much, although he has no savings, he still has a monthly pension. The action of Professor Le Ngoc Thach is receiving support from the online community after this information was posted on social networks, attracting thousands of shares and interactions.
Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach, born in 1948, was a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, and is now retired. He is the author of many applied research works, textbooks, and reference books on Chemistry.
Many people expressed their pride in being his students, a shining example for many generations. Many even cried because they admired their teacher's heart.
"When I learned that he had withdrawn all his savings to support people in the flood-hit areas, I burst into tears, my eyes stinging with pity for him, with emotion, and with admiration. He is old and his health is not good anymore, but like when he was teaching, he always looks out for everyone. His heart is truly admirable," said one of Mr. Thach's students.
After learning that his teacher had withdrawn all of his retirement money to contribute to the flood victims, the student also decided to withdraw half of his salary to help the people in the North affected by storm No. 3. In response to the admiration of everyone and his students, Professor Le Ngoc Thach humbly replied: "Thank you, you're welcome."
Realizing that the affected people were in dire need of material and spiritual support to overcome difficulties, he decided to withdraw his retirement pension to support them.
Talking about using all his savings to give away, Professor Le Ngoc Thach said that those are things within his ability, he will try his best to do whatever he can.
With many concerned that he will be in need later, he said he lives alone, doesn't spend much, and still has a monthly pension.
An official at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) shared that before retiring, Professor Le Ngoc Thach worked as a manager and lecturer in the chemistry department of the school.
Previously, he contributed twice to the Le Van Thoi Award (an award honoring excellent graduation theses at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels, conducted and defended at the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City National University). The first time was 1.5 billion VND, the second time was 500 million VND.
He also contributed to the Le Van Thoi green chemistry award of the Ho Chi Minh City Chemistry Association and many other social and relief activities.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach is the author of many applied research works, textbooks, and chemistry reference books. Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach also initiated the Le Van Thoi Award to honor outstanding graduation topics at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral training levels, conducted and defended at the University of Natural Sciences, VNU-HCM City, with all or part of the research results published in prestigious international scientific journals with high impact factors.
