The film borrows the oral legend "The Dog in the Hat" - a folk tale that mainly exists in the Northern region - to warn about moral degradation in a family selling dog meat.
By the end of 2023, the dominant genre in Vietnamese theaters is horror titles from home and abroad. Of these, Vietnam has 4 films. The work currently attracting attention among them is "Demon Dog" by first-time director Luu Thanh Luan.
"Devil Dog" gained attention for addressing the controversial issue: "Should we stop eating dog meat?" At the same time, exploit folk materials. Up to now, after nearly 5 days of early release, the film has collected nearly 17.6 billion VND, ranked a relatively large number of screenings (more than 1,600 screenings per day), just behind the blockbuster " Aquaman" (about more than 3,000 screenings).
According to Box Office Vietnam, as of 11:30 p.m. on December 25, Demon Dog has surpassed Soul Eater, rising to the top 2 at the box office. The film's sales have now exceeded 14 billion VND, after the first early screenings. The film is labeled T18, suitable for audiences over 18 years old with intermittent scenes of violenc.e and gor.e.
The story revolves around Nam, who was "raised by his family's longtime dog meat business", but is also determined to find the cause of strange phenomena to end the family's scary tragedy.
After organizing his father's funeral and helplessly witnessing each family member die in horror, Nam gradually realized unusual symptoms from Mit - the white-haired, red-nosed dog in folk legend.
The work also clearly reflects the blind use of spells and black magic, causing tragedies like the "half laughing, half crying" burial of Mr. Manh.
To create a consistent storyline, the director also successfully built typical character motifs with opposite personalities and viewpoints. While their parents, uncles and aunts all thought that the job of selling dog meat was harmless, "I didn't think anything of it, I didn't see anything", Nam and Xuan were worried and scared about everything that was going on. around, from the sudden deaths of loved ones to Mit's red eyes of hatred and many other mysterious phenomena.
Following the developments in Ghost Dog, it can be seen that Nam and Xuan are two pitiful and resigned characters, as five times seven times they are scrutinized, criticized, and even harmed so that Xuan has a miscarriage. Nam is the one who tries to fight almost alone, to protect his family, but unfortunately, everyone is a slave to money! For mone.y, they ignore disagreements, ignore the truth, and ignore the law of cause and effect.
They criticized and considered Nam's warnings to be unreasonable and untrue. In the end, there was only Nam left, struggling to understand the truth and courageously confronting the scary demon dogs.
Overcoming all the hardships and challenges with Nam, Xuan is still a character that symbolizes the energy source of modern "women" - still retaining the beauty of Vietnamese women such as tolerance, hard work, and acceptance. sacrifice. She also wants to fight against old-fashioned, harsh concepts such as "respecting men over women", not being able to get pregnant before marriage, not eating dog meat as "a mistake against the homeland's specialties", or not being allowed to mourn early. to get married...
The film is set in modern times, but horror spiritual images, details of ancient folk legends or regional cultural diversity are still skillfully interwoven into the story line.
In recent years, music fans have repeatedly shaken their heads at movie titles that have "an elephant's head and a mouse's tail", pose too many problems but cannot find a solution, or make fragmented script errors,... Gradually , according to common psychology, every time there is a project about to be released, besides waiting, there are also countless skeptical opinions, wondering if this is a new "cinematic disaster", and Devil Dog also no exceptions. However, what the film has brought up to this point is far different from the initial skepticism.
Overall, the movie is better than expected, delivering a story with depth, a less "bad" script, and uniform acting from the cast. However, this project still makes the audience click their tongues and say: "If only..." when there are still minus points in the effects section.
Movie Cam: Beautiful enough setting, scary enough, engaging enough acting, but minus 1 point Thảo Mai16:56:20 19/09/2024Tam Cam is a national fairy tale that everyone knows by heart. Turning the film version of Cam into a horror film is a curious move, but also risky because if done poorly, the audience will react.
