The Sun Man, which just came out in theaters, has received many frank compliments and criticisms from the audience. Accordingly, while the main cast stands out, the film is criticized a lot for its script and actors' performances.
After being known as the producer of many popular Vietnamese films such as The Maid, The Stiletto Shoe Conspiracy, Sister Sister, director Timothy Linh Bui directed a film filmed in Vietnam for the first time: People sun. This is also the second Vietnamese film to exploit the vampire image after the film The Vampire Master (2019) by director Tran Nhan Kien.
The Sun Man revolves around Nhat (Tran Ngoc Vang) and his brother Marco (Thuan Nguyen) - two hundred-year-old vampires. Nhat and his relatives live on a houseboat in a remote area and never drink human blood. They believe that one day they will be able to become human again and step into the light again. Meanwhile, Marco lives in the city and constantly hunts people to satisfy his bloodlust. Trouble comes when Nhat accidentally lets schoolgirl Ha (Trinh Thao) know that he is a vampire. Trieu ( Chi Pu) - the queen of vampires and also Marco's lover - forced Nhat to kill Ha to hide the secret. When Japan refused, the conflict became increasingly fierce.
Although the idea is new, the script is still criticized because it is full of plot, boring, long and predictable. The film has many details similar to other vampire works. The way the director builds the relationship between Nhat and Marco is no different from Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) in The Vampire Diaries. They both went from being angry to being "against the world" together, then to being in conflict over a girl. Maybe it's just that Marco doesn't love Ha. The image of a group of vampires carelessly riding motorbikes is taken from The Lost Boys.
The movie Sun People invested heavily in the visual part and horror elements, but the exploitation of the vampire image was just the shell. The main story and message is still family love and brotherhood like many other Vietnamese films.
Although it has a simple plot, the film's progression is quite confusing. The story lines tell the past of the Macro - Japan brothers, including the story of the death of the mother, the process of vampire cultivation to control bloodlust; The feelings between Macro - Trieu and between Japan - Ha are not coherent.
Not only that, intentionally incorporating hot scenes into the film also made a part of the audience very curious: "For what?"
At the beginning of the film, the audience was surprised when director Timothy Linh Bui put Trieu and Marco's violent love scene in the bar bathroom on film. This scene actually has no effect on the film's content, whether it exists or not.
If the intense emotional scene between the two characters makes the movie climax, creating a twist, the audience easily accepts it, but here comes the innocuous type of clickbait that gave the impression of The Sun Man. decreased more or less.
"Offensive, vulgar, not interesting at all", is the audience's opinion when talking about the characters' love scene in the bar.
The cast is highly appreciated for their appearance and acting experience. However, when returning home from watching, many viewers were unsatisfied with the role-playing of some characters.
Although he is a fairly "young" name in the main cast, Tran Ngoc Vang is the actor who is most appreciated for his acting duties. Viewers can hardly recognize the jubilant Binh character in The One Who Must Forget and Remember 3 years ago. He shows the inner feelings of a person who has to turn his back on his fellow humans to protect humanity. The losses and suffering in Japan over the past hundreds of years are clearly revealed.
Thuan Nguyen struggled to portray a bloodthirsty vampire, when he should have focused more on expressing the character's inner feelings. Actress Chi Pu (role Trieu) - who is considered the star attraction for the film - is able to portray the character's elegance and power on the outside. Trinh Thao (as Ha) has the opportunity to show off her acting ability more than in previous films. Like Tran Ngoc Vang, she scored points in acting with her eyes.
Chi Pu is considered the person with the worst performance in terms of acting. The actress showed a stiff face, with a hundred expressions as one. Whether in pain, surprise or anger, Trieu has almost only one facial expression.
In general, the actors' lyrics, especially Chi Pu, are quite bad. In many parts, viewers can hardly hear what they are saying and have to read the English subtitles to understand. Not only that, director Timothy Linh Bui seemed to write the dialogue in English and then Vietnameseize it. Therefore, what the characters say is very forced, overly formal and no different from textbooks.
In general, director Timothy Linh Bui's work is new in that it places the brotherly love story in the context of the vampire world, and is meticulous in terms of technique and production. But the film still faces limitations in the script stage like many other Vietnamese films. In addition, the dialogue is awkward, unnatural, and many segments are heavily preachy.
