Among many TV series about modern family life, Di Giua Troi Ruc Ro by director Do Thanh Son attracts attention when describing the life of people in the highlands.
Without a famous cast, the project attracts audiences with its light content, exploring the topic of young people's lives. The content revolves around Pu - a girl who loves to explore, does not want to stay in the fields and get married early like her friends. When she gets into university, Pu faces many problems when her father does not pay for her tuition, and Chai (Nguyen Long Vu) - her childhood best friend, wants to marry her. The marriage was initially arranged to settle debts, but then Chai falls in love with Pu.
The work combines love and family stories, highlighting the main character's personality. Pu always wants to escape poverty and rise up in life. She tries her best to protect the weak, but at the same time does not want to be imposed by the custom of early marriage. Many times pursued by Chai, Pu continuously rejects his feelings. She always wants to leave the countryside to go to the city to experience many new things. However, economic and family barriers make the path she chooses full of thorns.
The screenwriter describes the characters with multi-dimensional emotions, making viewers sympathize and be moved. When talking to her father, Pu is often grumpy because she does not understand his thoughts, causing many conflicts. With her mother and younger sister, she cares for and loves them. When talking to friends in the village, Pu is gentle and considerate, even trying to help May (Phan Thi Ngoc Thuong) and her mother when giving birth.
In episode four, when she saw her father selling the only buffalo in the family, Pu burst into tears because she felt sorry for the animal that had been with her for many years. She was willing to help patients while waiting for the doctor to treat them. The character believes that studying and exploring life helps her experience and grow. After gaining enough experience, she will contribute and help her homeland develop.
Interspersed with the heroine's dream is the story of a poor countryside. Pu's family, who work as herbalists, only earn enough to feed their four members. When she hears that Pu has passed the university entrance exam, her mother - Mrs. Den (Van Anh) - tries to find a way to take care of her daughter, while Pu's father - Mr. Xuon (Minh Hai) - prevents her from studying. When he learns that Mrs. Den stole money to pay for her tuition, Mr. Xuon criticizes his wife and daughter, causing tension in the family relationship.
The feelings of a lonely man when his wife passed away are expressed through the character of Chai's father - Mr. Chieu (played by Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai). He is the richest man in the area but is a widower, he devotes all his love to Chai even though he loves to play and does not care about studying. The content also mentions child marriage and domestic violence through the storylines of supporting characters, thereby showing the dark side of society. The stories are intertwined, describing the injustice that women face.
The performance of the main actors impressed the audience. Thu Ha Ceri had many scenes, conveying the intelligence and efforts to overcome fate of the character Pu through her actions and facial expressions. In the scene with Long Vu (as Chai), Thu Ha Ceri revealed a fierce, grumpy look. When acting with artist Van Anh (as Mrs. Den), she exuded gentleness and kindness.
Long Vu plays the role of a spoiled young master who lacks his mother's love. The audience commented that he has a natural acting style, with many spontaneous actions of a young man. Although it is his first time acting together, Long Vu works well with Thu Ha Ceri, showing a childish but emotional personality. The character has some trendy sayings such as "Pu just needs to be my wife, I will agree to anything".
The film has many natural scenes of the Cao Bang mountains, combined with traditional culture. However, the film still has many limitations. In the scene where May suffered a hemorrhage during childbirth and urgently needed money for surgery in episode 10, Pu called Chai for help. Instead of gently begging her friend, she yelled at Chai to borrow money. According to some viewers, the screenwriter should have created a character of Pu who is brave and has a strong personality but at the same time knows how to respect others.
Because of these details, some readers boldly left comments about Pu: "Desire but using other people's feelings, trust and money to fulfill as if it were her "duty" whether she wanted it or not, she still accepted all the help very naturally. I didn't watch this movie, only watched some cuts but I really don't like the female lead's personality and thoughts at all", "Only watched some cuts but I see the main character's personality reflects the truth about 17, 18 year old girls who think pragmatically and put themselves first", "Ignoring people who are not as smart as me (the male lead), but always accepting their kindness "accidentally" as "reasonable"?,..
In addition, some opinions said that the costumes in the film were not accurate. The representative of the film crew said that the costumes were consulted by experts and approved by the People's Committee of Cao Bang province. However, the audience said that the way the image of ethnic people was built was prejudiced and imposed.
