Rosé's collaboration with American singer Bruno Mars, "APT.", is making K-pop history. However, the song is currently embroiled in a plagiarism controversy over a Japanese song.
The Japanese song that is said to be similar to "APT." being discussed online is called "Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Kid" by Japanese singer-songwriter Mikun Sawai. The song was released on November 13, 2013. The song became popular in Japan at the time, peaking at number 37 on the Oricon charts.
Listeners have pointed out that the main melody at the 40-second mark of "Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Kid" (and the main melody at the 33-second mark of "APT.") are similar. When the tempo of "APT." is adjusted to match that of "Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Kid," the similarities become even more apparent.
Miku Sawai's "Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Kid" is an upbeat dance song that captures the rebellious spirit of adolescence. While the overall intro of the song has a different feel than "APT.", the main melody, which carries significant weight in both songs, has caused controversy, with many claiming that they are "too similar".
"APT." was written by Bruno Mars, Rosé, Rock City and Circuit, among others.
Those who listened to both songs commented, "Aren't they basically the same song?" and "there's a reason why the melody is familiar." One listener commented, "Rosé used a questionable melody. Looking at how Miki's 'Tommy Basil' was credited, it seems like Rosé and Bruno Mars were mindful of potential plagiarism issues. However, the crucial chorus is used so much that it's hard to tell who originally composed it...".
"When it is difficult to find the original author of a common melody, the correct approach is to sample from pre-existing songs," the listener continued. "Using an existing melody cannot be considered composition, and whether consciously or unconsciously, it qualifies as plagiarism. This Japanese song is just an example for comparison, but it is unlikely that this is the only song with a melody similar to "APT."".
This listener then added, "Luckily, this melody has been around for so long that even people who have used it before probably don't know who originally composed it, so it's unlikely anyone will file a lawsuit against Rosé."
As the controversy over the similarities and plagiarism between "APT." and "Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Kid" spread, the debate continued.
Rosé and Bruno Mars' "APT." surpassed 100 million views within five days of its release and immediately topped the US Spotify chart. The song also entered the UK Official Chart Top 100 at number four and is expected to chart highly on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Particularly noteworthy was Bruno Mars' reaction when "APT." won No. 1 on Mnet's music show "M Countdown." On October 25, Bruno posted on Instagram, "Thank you so much to our Korean fans. I cried all morning after our first win on a music show. Thank you for loving 'APT.' so much."
Regarding Rosé, from the quietest member since BlackPink split up to go solo, she has surpassed her teammates to cover the global music market. In particular, APT. has become an important milestone in the process of Kpop from a fandom-centered culture to a global trend when it is loved by the public around the world.
