Member V of the BTS group has once again become the focus of attention in the promotional image dispute. This incident made fans of the male singer angry that he was taken advantage of his image without asking for permission.
Accordingly, the city is said to have received 1 billion won for the tourism recovery project without the consent of V or his management company, BIGHIT Music.
As part of the project, officials used a photo of V taken in Chuncheon and planned to create a "V Photo Zone" and other attractions based on the singer's image.
As soon as this information was spread, BIGHIT Music took swift action. The company officially asked the Chuncheon government to remove V's image from the project, emphasizing that using the artist's image without permission is a violation of personal and commercial rights.
This request was made not long after Chuncheon mayor Yuk Dong Han posted a photo on social media. In the photo, the mayor appears at the very spot where V was seen during his recent military training days. The post quickly attracted more than 1,700 reactions, turning V's presence into a powerful promotional tool for the Chuncheon Folk Flea Market.
A city official told South Korea's local newspaper "Segye Ilbo": "We have asked the local government to delete the photo because it uses a portrait of an artist without the approval of his management company." Another official further clarified: "The management company did not directly ask us to remove the image. We proactively made this decision to avoid any potential controversy."
However, they also emphasized that the goal of the local government is not merely to use the V image, but to exploit the places that the male singer has visited to promote tourism. This shows the growing trend of many local governments in South Korea to take advantage of BTS's popularity to attract tourists, leading to increasing copyright disputes.
BIGHIT Music has long been resolute in protecting the image rights of artists under its leadership. Previously, the company had successfully requested the demolition of the BTS Bus Station in Jumunjin, the location related to the 2017 album You Never Walk Alone, as well as the demolition of the BTS photo shoot in Samcheok Si, Gangwon Do.
Disputes over image rights between BIGHIT Music and local authorities are not uncommon. In July 2021, the conflict resumed when the city of Samcheok restored the sculptures used during filming at Maengbang Beach for BTS's album Butter.
This incident has once again sparked a debate about the boundary between the commercial rights of artists and the interests of local tourism. In the context that BTS is one of the most famous music groups in the world, their image not only has artistic value but also has a strong economic influence.
Recently, V was also treated unfairly in a nomination category for the 34th Seoul Music Awards. The reason comes from the fact that V ( Kim Taehyung) was completely excluded from the nomination list, even though the male singer had an impressive year of musical activities. This made the BTS fan community, ARMY, shocked and outraged, when they thought that V completely deserved a nomination.
Many fans expressed their disappointment on social media platforms, questioning the review criteria of the organizers. According to the official announcement, artists who release music between January 2024 and March 2025 are eligible to participate in the competition.
Data from the Circle Chart, a prestigious ranking that tracks artists' performance and influence, is an important factor in the nomination process. However, according to many fans, this process seems unfair when V is completely absent from the list.
The absence of V from the nomination list makes many people suspect that this is not a random omission, but may be a "disrespect" or "unfairness" for the male idol. Some ARMYs also criticized HYBE's management company for not promoting V's solo products strongly enough.
Hashtags such as #VDeservesBetter (V deserves better) and #JusticeForTaehyung (Justice for Taehyung) quickly spread on social media, showing the dissatisfaction of the fan community around the world.
They want to receive a clear explanation from the tournament organizers as well as BTS's management company. Whatever the final outcome, this incident once again underscores the importance of fairness in music awards, as well as the rights of artists to receive the recognition they deserve for their talent and dedication.
