Le Tong My Lan fell in love with Indian pilot Vignesh Mahadevan after many cultural and family barriers. Their cross-cultural marriage became a beautiful and "inspiring" love story.
Born and raised in a warm family in Ho Chi Minh City, Le Tong My Lan (born in 1994) is always proud of being raised in a loving environment. She is currently starting a business in the culinary field. Life seemed to be going smoothly, until she met Vignesh Mahadevan - an Indian pilot (born in 1989), a Brahmin and the eldest son in a strict Hindu family.
Two people from two strange cultures, different in language, religion, and customs, but found common ground in their hearts. The fateful encounter began on a dating app in March 2019. The first time they met at the cinema, both were quickly attracted by Vignesh's humor and charm and My Lan's curious, exploratory personality.
The following consecutive dates gradually connected them, their feelings developed naturally without too many promises. They lived together in Ho Chi Minh City, enjoyed simple meals, and gentle words every day. For My Lan, that was a simple but genuine happiness.
After a year of dating, the couple decided to make their relationship public to both families. While My Lan's parents easily accepted because their daughter was happy, Vignesh's family was not so easy. As the eldest son in a traditional Brahmin family, Vignesh was expected to marry an Indian girl to continue the family's culture. When they found out that their son was dating a foreigner, his parents reacted strongly and even gave him a stressful choice: "either the family or My Lan".
Understanding the dilemma, Vignesh chose to remain silent. As for My Lan, although sad, she still respected her boyfriend's choice. It was not until 2023 that she decided to go to India for the first time to meet her boyfriend's family.
At the large villa imbued with Hinduism, with 60 statues of gods and deities, and morning prayer rituals, My Lan was overwhelmed and inevitably bewildered. During the 10 days of their stay, she and Vignesh had to stay in a hotel, bringing gifts to his parents' house every day, but only received silence or opposition.
However, throughout those tense conversations, Vignesh only said one firm sentence: "I will only marry her". That firmness became My Lan's greatest spiritual support.
After months of perseverance, the couple returned to India once again. Surprisingly, this time, Vigneshâs family had changed. They invited My Lan to live with them, prepared clothes, jewelry, and expressed their sincere acceptance. She knew that all the efforts had paid off.
In March 2025, a traditional Indian wedding took place solemnly with a series of sacred rituals such as the garland ceremony, Madhuparka ceremony, Kanyadaan ceremony, Laja Homa ceremony... For Vietnamese brides, all were strange and memorable experiences. In particular, My Lan was most touched when she was given a mosaic of the couple painstakingly made by an elderly aunt. Not only did the husband's family not ask for a dowry as is customary, but they also prepared everything for their daughter-in-law.
A week later, the wedding was held in Vietnam, surprising the groomâs family with the excitement and friendliness of the Vietnamese people. From the wedding ceremony, the trays of gifts to the carefully prepared dishes according to Indian and Vietnamese tastes, everyone felt welcomed like family.
Currently, My Lan and her husband are living in Ho Chi Minh City. She does not feel pressured to be an Indian daughter-in-law because her husband's family does not place much importance on formalities. Although she has time to pray in the shrine room every morning, her in-laws never force her to change or follow a pattern. On the contrary, they always ask: "Are you comfortable?"
In particular, her mother-in-law always prepared traditional costumes and accessories and guided her daughter-in-law step by step so that she would not be confused during the holidays. The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship thus became increasingly close.
