Just three days after the wedding, Lokeshwari (22 years old, living in Ponneri, Chennai, India) shocked the whole family when she was found committing suicide in the bathroom.
The tragic death of the young bride is sparking a wave of outrage related to the issue of dowry â an old custom that still weighs heavily on the shoulders of many Indian women.
According to local media, Lokeshwari got married on June 27. It was thought that happiness would start here, but it was only on June 30 â after returning to visit her parents and husband â that the young girl was gone forever.
The reason is believed to be a conflict in the dowry. According to the complaint of Mr. Gajendran â the victim's father â the husband pressured his wife's family to give more gold, an air conditioner and many other household items. The argument was ultimately said to be a drop in the glass, leading to Lokeshwari's traumatic decision.
Police said there was an argument between the couple before Lokeshwari locked herself in the bathroom and committed suicide.
The death of Lokeshwari â a 22-year-old young woman living in Ponneri, Chennai â just three days after the wedding ceremony is shocking Indian public opinion. The incident raised alarm bells about dowry â a practice that has been legally forbidden, but still quietly exists as a "marriage tax" that weighs heavily on women's shoulders.
According to testimony from the girl's family, before the wedding ceremony, they agreed to give 5 gold coins as a dowry â each dong is equivalent to about 8g of gold. However, at the time of the wedding, they could only give 4 dong. Soon after, the husband's family allegedly pressured the girl's family to hand over the rest. The controversy erupted after Lokeshwari and her husband visited their parents' home on June 30, and she was found to have taken her own life in the bathroom.
The husband's family has denied all allegations, affirming that they do not ask for or coerce anything about the wedding property. Meanwhile, the Avadi police confirmed that they are conducting an investigation, have filed a case file and are preparing to arrest the husband for investigation.
Although the practice of asking for a dowry was banned by Indian law more than 60 years ago, in fact, this tradition is still deeply ingrained in life â especially in poor rural areas, where the notion of "girls are a burden" persists. The girl's family is often asked to "compensate" the boy's family in gold, electronics, vehicles or cash.
Statistics from India's National Crime Records Bureau show that in 2020 alone, nearly 7,000 women were harmed because of dowry-related disputes â an average of about 19 women die every day. In addition, more than 1,700 women were recorded to have chosen to commit suicide because they were pressed by dowry claims.
Experts warn that the actual number may be much more serious than the official statistics, because behind the cold numbers are countless silent tragedies that have never been revealed. Many women choose to remain silent for fear of being stigmatized, because of family pressure, or simply too used to being looked down upon, treated as a "bargain" in marriage.
According to experts, the root of the problem lies in society's tacit acceptance of domestic violence â where the wife's suffering is considered private, and the resignation is labeled "gentle". Along with that, there are deep-seated prejudices about the submissive role of women in the family, depriving them of their voice, choice and even the opportunity to live properly.
Lokeshwari's tragedy is not only a heartbreaking suicide after marriage, but also a wake-up call for the invisible â but cruel â pressures that thousands of women still suffer every day because of the outdated practices of "dowry". Although it has been banned by law for decades, this practice continues to creep in, causing tragedy in thousands of families, especially in rural areas.
