In the recent series of Che Linh's memories, famous singer Che Linh shared his emotions about his return to his homeland Vietnam. At the age of over 80, he expressed his boundless happiness when he was warmly welcomed by the audience and had the opportunity to visit places associated with the history and culture of the country. One of his most profound memories was the 2011 performance in the Capital, in the program Che Linh - 30 years of reunion.
Standing on the stage of the National Convention Center, he was deeply moved when witnessing the love that the audience gave him. That warm reception was a great motivation for him and the artists to practice seriously, devote themselves, and bring a resoundingly successful music night. During the preparation for the show, Che Linh spent time walking around Hoan Kiem Lake and walking on the sidewalks of Hanoi. He was surprised and deeply moved when many audiences recognized him and expressed their admiration.
After the concert in Hanoi, the famous singer continued his journey to Phan Rang - his hometown, to attend the traditional festival of the Cham people. Che Linh, whose real name is Cha Len, was born in 1942 in paley Hamu Tanran (now in Huu Duc village, Phuoc Huu commune, Ninh Phuoc, Ninh Thuan). In 1959, he left his hometown for Saigon and started his singing career. He quickly affirmed his name, becoming one of the "four pillars of bolero music" with Duy Khanh, Nhat Truong and Hung Cuong.
However, Che Linhâs greatest wish upon returning to the country was not only to perform, but also to see and remember historical sites with his own eyes. After Saigon, Hanoi and Phan Rang, his next stop was Ben Hai River, which is connected to Hien Luong Bridge â a sacred symbol of national unity. Here, he performed a special ritual: pouring a bottle of water on the ground, respectfully reporting to the gods and remembering his deceased fathers and colleagues.
"I poured water on the ground to ask permission to stand here and breathe the air of my homeland," he shared. "At that moment, I called out the names of my colleagues who had passed away before having the chance to come here." Standing in front of Hien Luong Bridge, Che Linh could not help but be moved, deeply feeling the meaning of harmony and unity. He also sent his prayers for peace and happiness to the gods and the children of Vietnam.
During the conversation, Che Linh emphasized that the warm affection that the audience gave him was a priceless gift. He recounted: "From Tan Son Nhat airport to Noi Bai, I was welcomed, given flowers, and asked to take pictures. I was truly happy and grateful." This affection is not only admiration for an artist, but also respect for the musical values that he has built and preserved over the years.
Despite his old age, Che Linh is still devoted to his singing career. He is the only one of the "four pillars" who is still active until now and is widely admired by the public. Every night of his performances is always packed with audiences. His voice is still full of emotion, full of inner strength, expressing a unique style that cannot be confused with anyone else's. With his great contributions, he is considered a "monument" of the golden music genre, having a strong influence on many generations of singers who came after him. In 1980, he left Vietnam for Malaysia, then settled in Toronto, Canada. Although far from his homeland, his love for music and the land of Vietnam still burns in his heart. His trips back are not only an opportunity for him to meet the audience, but also a journey to find his roots, where he can live fully with his greatest wish.
