In Vietnam, breast cancer accounts for nearly 29% of all cancer cases in women, meaning that nearly one in three women with cancer has breast cancer. With nearly 25,000 new cases detected, breast cancer has surpassed liver cancer to lead the number of new cases in Vietnam, according to the Global Cancer Organization (GLOBOCAN).

Breast cancer has a high survival rate of more than 90% if detected early. However, currently, most breast cancer cases come to the hospital when the disease is in the late stages, making it more difficult to respond to treatment. Therefore, detecting breast abnormalities by self-examining the breasts at home is very important. According to WebMD, there are some early signs of breast cancer to pay attention to, including:

1. New, unusual lump in the breast

An unusual lump is the first early symptom of breast cancer. Breast cancer lumps are usually hard with irregular borders and are painless. The lump can appear in the breast or under the arm (axillary area).

One can check by slowly touching and squeezing the breasts on both sides and under the arms, the tail area, the collarbone and behind the nipples while standing straight in front of a mirror, with both arms raised and while lying down. Use 2-3 fingers (index - middle, ring) tightly closed to move slowly in a spiral motion around the breasts and gradually expand.

2. Swelling

Breast cancer can cause swelling in an area of the breast. Many people with breast cancer have reported feeling the swelling in their breast before they noticed any unusual lump.

Of course, not all breast pain is due to breast cancer. Breast pain can be caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy or premenstrual syndrome, mastitis, side effects of medications, costochondritis, breast trauma, ill-fitting bras, etc. It is important to seek medical attention early if breast pain is not related to the causes listed above or if the pain is persistent, comes and goes, and recurs repeatedly.

4. Discharge, change in nipple shape

Abnormal discharge in the form of thick or thin from one or both nipples; discharge that is milky white, clear white, yellow, green, especially nipple discharge mixed with bloo.d unrelated to pregnancy is an early sign of breast cancer that needs attention.
