Thanks to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the faces of many historical figures of the Qing Dynasty â the last feudal dynasty of China â are gradually being restored, bringing a more realistic and interesting view to posterity.
If in the past, hand-drawn portraits may not fully depict the beauty of real people, now, AI has helped us visualize more clearly.
Typically, the case is the case of Princess Hoa Hieu, the daughter who is said to be the most loved by Emperor Qianlong. The AI-based restorations based on portraits and descriptions in history books about this princess have impressed many people. Her beauty is commented as a "diving starling" and more surprisingly, this beauty is quite close to modern aesthetics, far from some previous visualizations of classic beauty.
Born in the last years of Qianlong's reign, Princess Hoa Hieu â the youngest daughter of the famous emperor of the Qing Dynasty â not only has a gentle and gentle beauty but is also the most loved by her father. Her life went through many turning points, from the days of living in silk velvet in the Forbidden City to the pain of losing her husband, raising children and witnessing the decline of her husband's family.
Qianlong's Last Treasure
Princess Hoa Hieu, also known as the Ten Princesses, was born in 1775 â on the 3rd day of the New Year, the 40th year of the Qianlong Dynasty. She is the tenth daughter and youngest child of Emperor Qianlong, born in the Duc Wisdom Palace, and her mother is Don Fei Uong City.
By the time Hoa Hieu was born, Qianlong had already turned six weeks old, and the Forbidden City had not had a child's voice for a long time. Therefore, her appearance is like a new light in the harem. Qian Long's love for her was extremely special â deep and emotional, so much so that the harem of the time still circulated that Hoa Hieu was the most favored princess of all his daughters.
The "storm shield" in the palace
According to historical records, Hoa Hieu is often affectionately called Ba La Princess â meaning "storm shield". Folklore has it that every time Qianlong gets angry, just by seeing her, the anger will quickly dissipate. Therefore, in the palace, anyone who was about to be punished prayed for her presence to "appease" the king and father.
Even Dung Phi Hoa Zhuo Thi â a famous concubine of Qian Long â loves Hoa Hieu like his own son. When she died, Dung Phi left more than 200 treasures to her, showing her deep attachment.
Mother-daughter love and incidents in the harem
Don Phi Uong Thi, Hoa Hieu's biological mother, was ordained as a concubine just two months after her pregnancy. However, she was famous for having a short-tempered temper, often punishing courtiers and eunuchs. In the 43rd year of the Qianlong Dynasty, after the incident of her beating a courtesan to death, Qianlong demoted her to the rank of Qin and transferred Hoa Hieu to another place to raise her.
But Hoa Hieu, who was too young to understand the truth, missed his mother very much. She stopped eating, stopped sleeping, and cried incessantly. Faced with that maternal affection, Qianlong was forced to let her return to her biological mother and soon restored the title to Dun Fei.
Father-like face and special charisma
One thing that makes Qian Long especially love Hoa Hieu is because she looks very similar to him. Once, the emperor once said: "If Hoa Hieu is the prince, I will definitely make her the successor." That is not only the idle words of an old father, but a clear proof of the deep affection that the king has for his youngest daughter.
In the 45th year of Qianlong, that is, in 1780, when Hoa Hieu was 6 years old, she was given the dharma name "Book of Lang Ban Cat Trac Ma" by the 6th Panchen Lama, which means "Mother of Sand Wall" â as a blessing for her life.
Political marriage and great grace
When Hoa Hieu was only 7 years old, Qian Long planned to marry her to Phong Than An Duc â the son of the great god Hoa Than, who was known as the "number one god" of the Qing Dynasty. When she was 10 years old, she was named Princess Hoa Thac; at the age of 12, she was given the title of Princess Gu Luan â the highest title for the emperor's daughter, usually only for the queen's children.
Qianlong also allowed her to use a procession made of gold â an unprecedented privilege. When she married Feng Chen An Duc in the 54th year of the Qianlong Dynasty, the dowry she received was said to be 10 times higher than that of Princess Hoa Thac Hoa Gia â her half-sister.
Events after the glory g
After Qianlong died in the 4th year of Gia Khanh (1799), Hoa Hieu's life gradually entered a challenging new chapter. Her husband's house â the Hoa Than family â fell into a great disaster when Hoa Than was convicted of serious crimes and confiscated his property. Hoa Hieu, with a kind heart, repeatedly asked King Gia Khanh â his brother â to reduce the sentence for his father-in-law. As a result, Phong Than An Duc â her husband â was pardoned and kept part of the property.
King Gia Khanh also showed his love for his sister when he gave her a generous allowance, ensuring a peaceful life after the storm.
In the 15th year of the Gia Khanh dynasty (1810), Hoa Hieu's husband died. She did not remarry, but spent the rest of her life raising her adopted son â Phuc An â who was allowed by Gia Khanh to inherit the title of Admiral from Hoa Than.
Princess Hoa Hieu died on September 10, the 3rd year of Dao Quang (1823), at the age of 49. After her death, Emperor Daoguang â Jiaqing's son â personally went to the tomb to hold a ceremony, showing his deep respect for the special princess of the Qing Dynasty.
The life of Princess Hoa Hieu is a symphony of love, grace and even upheaval. From a child born in the glory of the emperor, to becoming a symbol of Qianlong's love, until she went through the pain of loss, she still retained her dignity, composure and loyalty.
The story of Hoa Hieu not only shows a part of the emotional thoughts of the powerful emperor, but also reflects the ups and downs of the fate of women in the court â where glory always goes hand in hand with fluctuations.
