Hanoi operates over 1,800 AI traffic surveillance cameras, detecting 393 violations in just 3 days, and also assisting in finding a 78-year-old man who went missing, enhancing public safety.
Following the official launch of the Hanoi Traffic Control Center, the AI camera system across the city has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in managing and monitoring traffic safety. In just the first three days, authorities detected hundreds of violations, far exceeding the results of traditional patrol methods.
On the morning of December 13th, the Hanoi Traffic Control Center officially put into operation over 1,800 AI cameras installed on key streets. This system spans approximately 195 intersections, 25 roads, and many important bridges, with the ability to identify up to 28 different traffic violations.
During the first three days of operation, from December 13th to 16th, the system recorded 393 traffic violations, including 125 cars and 268 motorcycles. Of these, running red lights accounted for the majority with 352 cases, comprising 87 cars and 265 motorcycles. In addition, the system detected 5 cars failing to follow lane markings, one car driving against the flow of traffic on a one-way street, 3 motorcycles carrying more passengers than permitted, 21 cars stopping in prohibited areas, and 11 cars picking up and dropping off passengers illegally.
The Hanoi City Police Traffic Department's initial assessment indicates that the AI camera system is operating stably and effectively, with a significant increase in the number of recorded violations compared to traditional patrol methods and compared to the period before its official implementation.
In particular, the images extracted from the cameras are high-resolution, clearly displaying license plates, time, and violations. This facilitates verification and the creation of records for traffic violations, while ensuring accuracy and objectivity. All data is transmitted to a centralized server system, with a maximum storage time of 75 days, enabling efficient retrieval and control.
Besides assisting in handling violations, the AI camera system is also effective in emergency situations. On the afternoon of December 15th, a 78-year-old man residing in Thanh Xuan ward left home for exercise around 3:30 PM but had not returned by evening. His family searched for him without success and reported the incident to the Thanh Xuan Ward Police at 8:15 PM.
Immediately after receiving the information, the police used an AI camera system to track the elderly man's movements based on information provided by his family. The footage showed him walking along Nguyen Tuan Street, heading towards Thanh Xuan Park and passing through several other streets. The police, in coordination with the family, compiled identifying characteristics and posted the information on social media to ask for community assistance in the search.
At around 3:00 AM on December 16th, a local resident discovered an elderly man showing signs of fatigue in the Dich Vong area and safely escorted him home. This incident once again confirms the effectiveness and practicality of AI camera systems in supporting security efforts and ensuring social order and safety.
The application of AI technology in traffic monitoring in Hanoi not only helps to enhance the effectiveness of traffic violation control but also facilitates the work of the police force in emergency situations, thereby improving safety for citizens.
