The two phrases "Pho Anh Hai" and "No. 10 Dan Phuong" are becoming "golden keywords" on Vietnamese social networks, occupying all the waves of Google search rankings and food ordering applications, making everyone wonder what it is.
Recently, thousands of curious people rushed to look up, hoping to find a real pho shop in the heart of Hanoi, but in the end they found out... there is no pho shop with that name. In fact, it all stems from a "made in Vietnam" game that is shaking up the online community: Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant â Anh Hai's pho shop.
It is worth mentioning that this game is not heavily promoted, nor does it have a huge marketing budget. With just a few short review clips from Vietnamese streamers, TikTokers and gamers, "Pho Anh Hai" has gone viral at a dizzying speed, turning a small indie project into an online cultural phenomenon.
According to the developer, Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant is built on the Godot Engine platform, made by a student of Hanoi University of Science and Technology as a graduation project. After completion, the author decided to share it for free on the itch.io platform, which supports both Vietnamese and English. Unexpectedly, in just a few days, the game has attracted the attention of the international community, many foreigners are curious about "Vietnamese pho" and Hanoi's popular culture.
The game takes players to a small village in the Dan Phuong region (Hanoi), where "Anh Hai" â the owner of a pho shop at the address "No. 10 Dan Phuong" â serves guests day by day in a space that is both familiar and quirky.
As soon as they enter the game, players will be amazed because every detail is depicted meticulously to the point of creepy realism. The old patterned cement tiles, the green painted walls, green plastic tables and chairs, jars of fresh chili peppers, jars of pickled onions, and gold signs with red letters â all perfectly reproduce the image of a Vietnamese popular restaurant.
The "visual specialties" such as the flyers "drilling and cutting concrete", "low-interest hot loans" or the slogan "Drug prevention is the responsibility of the whole people" appeared on the walls, making players laugh even more, but they also couldn't help but be moved by the sophistication and cultural understanding of the game maker.
Inside, there were only three small tables and a few strange guests. The menu is "everyday": Thai pho, cooked pho, beef ball pho, onionless pho, and a "specialty" that makes the community laugh â "driverless pho", all priced at 15,000 VND/bowl. As for side dishes such as cold rice 5,000 VND/plate, stir-fry 1,000 VND/piece are designed to be both rustic and gently satirical of the "standard Vietnamese" eating style.
The main task of the player is to serve pho at the request of the guests. But don't think it's easy: some people want to add onions, some people don't, some guests ask for cold rice to accompany or just eat stir-fries with broth. If he makes a mistake, "Anh Hai" will call Uncle Vang, a loyal but "scary" dog, to "handle" the player.
The plot gradually reveals bizarre and funny episodes, when the customers in the game are not just ordinary diners but a miniature version of modern Vietnamese society. From the shipper who is tired after a long day, MU fans who like coffee, stylish ladies, old people who only call "driverless pho", to a "noble" guy who talks in Japanese and calls you "onii-chan" â all create a vivid picture, both funny and subtly reflecting Vietnamese online life.
One player commented: "This game is like the Vietnamese version of Cooking Mama, but it's both funny and creepy. The scariest thing is that it's so real â just like the pho shop at the end of my alley."
Not only stopping at the entertainment factor, Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant is also praised for honoring Vietnamese culture through a modern perspective, while arousing pride in the creativity of Vietnamese youth in the game industry.
