After the great success of films such as The Godfather and The Lady's House, Tran Thanh continues to try his hand at the comedy genre in The Quartet. With an unprecedented box office record in previous Tet seasons, the audience can't help but look forward to this return.
The Four Newspapers tells the love story of Quynh Anh and Quoc Anh, a couple who used to be very happy but gradually became cold due to small conflicts in life. Quynh Anh decided to ask for the help of her best friend Kieu (Uyen An) and a tarot fortune teller named Che Si Ka to save the relationship. However, when dragging Quoc Anh back to his hometown, things got worse when the "supporting" quartet including Uncle Eleven, Aunt Four, Kieu and Che Sika unfortunately accidentally caused a series of bad and funny situations.
The love story between Quynh Anh and Quoc Anh is the main highlight, but the funny situations from this quartet are also a factor that makes the film interesting. However, unlike previous "noisy" comedy works, The Four Leopards keep a moderate grace, not too excessive, making viewers feel comfortable without being "out of rhythm" because of overly ostentatious comedy situations.
For the Four Tigers, Tran Thanh does not hesitate to experiment with new faces, especially young actors such as Tieu Vy, Quoc Anh and Ky Duyen.
Tieu Vy, with experience appearing in Jackpot Island, continues to be assigned the role of Quynh Anh. She shows a beautiful, cute Quynh Anh but has immaturity in emotions. Tieu Vy's acting has improved compared to the previous time, however, more flexibility in expressions and body language is still needed to add depth to the character.
Quoc Anh, despite possessing the appearance of a "male god", has not shown too much in this role. Although there are no obvious weaknesses, his role lacks prominence and emotional depth. Quoc Anh only stopped at the level of rounding his shoulders but could not make a strong impression.
Ky Duyen, trying her hand at acting for the first time, is the most notable factor. She plays Karen, a charming and calculating woman, and perfectly fits Ky Duyen's real-life style. Her acting is natural, sharp, and even though she is a rookie, Ky Duyen does not let the audience down. Her role has become a bright spot, bringing impressive moments in the film.
Although the title of the film somewhat reveals its purpose - as a comedy - The Fourth Quarter is not simply a work just for entertainment. Tran Thanh has cleverly integrated into it messages about love, relationships between generations in the family and women's independence. The story of Quynh Anh and Quoc Anh not only revolves around funny situations, but also reflects the differences in lifestyle and contradictions in the couple's relationship.
However, the biggest weakness of the film is the "cumbersomeness" in the script. The comedic situations are sometimes prolonged and lack sharpness, making the film feel dragging and not really causing constant laughter. Not to mention, the bank commercials included are quite "dotted" that make some viewers feel bothered, even though sponsorship from big brands is indispensable in maintaining the film's production budget.
With The Fourth Quarter, Tran Thanh clearly shows his wisdom in choosing the cast and how to build relationships between the characters. One of the strengths of the film is that Tran Thanh has taken advantage of the attraction of prominent faces from TV shows, such as the cast of "Brother Drunk" (Quan A.P, Ali Hoang Duong, Negav) to create more attention to the work.
Not only that, Tran Thanh also cleverly put famous singers in cameo roles, adding entertainment to the film. This helps attract more young audiences who love idols, and at the same time creates an effective marketing strategy. This is how Tran Thanh optimizes his box office attraction.
Moreover, choosing Miss Tieu Vy and Ky Duyen for the main roles is also a smart calculation of Tran Thanh. Both of these beauties have outstanding looks and personalities that match the characters they play. Tieu Vy brings clarity to Quynh Anh, while Ky Duyen shows Karen's sharpness, creating an interesting contrast between the two female characters.
However, advertising elements, the "cumbersomeness" in the script, and the unbreakable exploitation of comedy are still big minuses. However, with sharp calculations and strong marketing strategies, The Four Leopards are still able to win the love of the audience, especially young people who love lightness and ease of viewing.
The Four Revengers is not a perfect movie, but it has shown innovation in Tran Thanh's filmmaking style. With a simple script, the film is mainly intended for entertainment, giving the audience moments of gentle relaxation during the Tet holiday.
With his success at the box office, Tran Thanh will certainly continue to find ways to "discharge" more works like this in the future, and no one can deny that, despite his shortcomings, he is still one of the leading directors, actors and film producers in Vietnam today.
