When mentioning prophetic geniuses in history around the world, many people will immediately think of Ms. Vanga (famous blind prophet from Bulgaria), Nostradamus (brilliant French prophet), or in Asia, there is Zhuge Liang (China)...
However, not everyone knows that in Vietnamese history there was also a brilliant prophet who was recorded and passed down in history books. This character is "The teacher who is revered by the people as the number 1 prophet in Vietnam" - Trang Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem.
Accordingly, Nguyen Binh Khiem (1491-1585) was one of the most influential figures in Vietnamese history and culture in the 16th century. Not only famous for his morality, literary talent, and as a famous teacher during the Le-Mac conflict, Nguyen Binh Khiem was also popularly known and revered as the number 1 prophet of Vietnam. "An Nam ly so huu Trinh Tuyen" is the title that the Chinese gave him.
He did not rush to take part in the imperial examinations when living in a time of many changes. It was not until 1535 - when Mac Thai Tong's reign was at its peak - that he took the imperial examinations and passed the imperial examinations (he was 44 years old at that time). After that, he was appointed as Dong Cac Hieu Thu, then held the positions of Ta Thi Lang of the Ministry of Justice, Ta Thi Lang of the Ministry of Justice and also Dong Cac Dai Hoc Si.
Nguyen Binh Khiem submitted a petition to punish 18 corrupt officials when Mac Hien Tong ascended the throne, but the king did not accept it. In 1542, he resigned from his official position and returned to his hometown to teach. However, two years later, King Mac invited him to become an official and granted him the title of Trinh Nguyen Marquis and promoted him to the position of Minister of Justice and Minister of Justice, with the title of Trinh Quoc Cong. This is also the reason why people called him Trang Trinh.
He was considered by King Mac Thai Tong as a "military advisor" because he took on many court affairs such as discussing national affairs and following the king to quell rebellions. The book "Lich Trieu Hien Chuong Loai Chi" has a passage: "King Mac respected him as a teacher. When there were important matters in the country, he still sent envoys to ask him. Sometimes he even summoned him to the capital to ask for great advice. He was widely learned, deeply understood the meaning of the Book of Changes, and could predict rain, sunshine, misfortune, and fortune."
People also consider him the "number 1 prophet" in Vietnamese history. Nguyen Binh Khiem left behind 478 prophecies that are over 500 years old, collectively known as "Trang Trinh Prophecies".
It is worth mentioning that there are many sentences recorded in "Trang Trinh's Prophecy" that correspond to historical events in Vietnam as well as in the world that have occurred over the past 500 years. Nguyen Binh Khiem was the first person in our country's history to mention the two words Vietnam through the prophecy "Vietnam was founded by its founder".
In the article "Strategic vision of islands and seas by Trang Trinh from 500 years ago", author Nguyen Dinh Minh commented: "In the past, when referring to territory, we often talked a lot about mountains, rivers, land, we talked about the sea but not much, the sea was not the main focus. But 500 years ago, Nguyen Binh Khiem predicted the importance of islands and seas leading to the survival and prosperity of the whole country. That shows that his strategic vision of protection was very broad and comprehensive".
With the poem Cu Ngao Doi Son, Nguyen Binh Khiem can be considered the first person in Vietnamese history to realize the importance of preserving sovereignty over the East Sea.
Nguyen Binh Khiem was the first person in history to mention the two words Vietnam through the prophecy "Vietnam was founded by its founder". Meanwhile, Nguyen Binh Khiem lived under the time when the country's name was Dai Viet, which was changed to Nam Viet 300 years later and then to Vietnam.
Many researchers also believe that Nguyen Binh Khiem was likely the first person in the country's history to have a strategic vision of the country's sovereignty over the East Sea as early as the 16th century. Besides the sentence "Hoanh Son Nhat Dai Kha Di Dung Than" (meaning a strip of Hoanh Son can shelter the body), Nguyen Binh Khiem also had a prophecy that "The East Sea is thousands of miles wide open to protect/ The Vietnamese land will be stable and peaceful for thousands of years". These are all prophetic words recorded in Nguyen Binh Khiem's Bach Van Am Thi Tap with the poem Cu Ngao Dai Son.
"The East Sea is thousands of miles long, we spread our arms to hold it / The Vietnamese land will forever be peaceful / In times of danger, we will strive / The ancient land of our ancestors" - these verses express the perspective of the world for thousands of years, Trang Trinh advised generations of Vietnam to hold the East Sea so that the country can be peaceful and prosperou.s forever.
The Vietnamese people always respect and are proud when mentioning Nguyen Binh Khiem, a figure who contributed his intelligence to the culture, especially caring about people's lives by advising kings and royalties to avoid causing unnecessary bloodshed in plots to usurp power.
Nguyen Binh Khiem is honored as Thanh Son Taoist or Thanh Son Chơn nhon - one of the three sacred saints of Cao Dai religion. At the Tay Ninh Holy See, there is a painting of Tam Thanh Ky Hoa depicting Nguyen Binh Khiem next to Victor Hugo and Ton Trung Son.
