Underage marriage is always a matter that needs to be strictly prohibited and eliminated. But Emma Edwards, a 10-year-old girl, had a wedding that took place in support of both sides of the family for this particular reason.
Wearing a beautiful wedding dress, marrying someone you love is one of the biggest dreams in the life of many girls. But for Emma Edwards this was far-fetched. So, before Emma left the world, the family held a warm wedding for both children. Emma became a beautiful and extremely happy bride on her wedding day. Sadly, after just 12 days of receiving blessings from relatives and friends, Emma passed away forever.
Emma Edwards, a 10-year-old girl in the US, found life grim again when she contracted acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) â a cancer of immature lymphocytes, which is severe and irreversible. This means she can't have a future, especially when it comes to marriage.
It is known that in normal people Lymphocytes are found in the blood, lymph nodes and spleen. Healthy lymphocytes fight bacterial and viral infections. In people with ALL, new lymphocytes do not develop into mature cells but exist as immature cells called lymphoblasts.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALL is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is the most common type of cancer in children, and treatments can give pediatric patients with ALL a good chance of recovery. However, in June, Emma's parents received the news that their young daughter's illness could not be cured, and she only had a few more days to live.
Her parents, Alina and Aaron Edwards, who live in Walnut Cove, North Carolina, had hoped their daughter could beat cancer.
"We had another treatment, and the doctors said she could live only a few days to a week, not weeks," Alina, 39, told Kennedy News and Media. "The whole family really didn't want to hear that. We thought that applying a different treatment to him might work. But the doctor's announcement was like a punch. It's something you never imagined."
As soon as she learned this heartbreaking news, Emma's mother wanted to do everything possible to fulfill part of her daughter's wishes, so that she would not have to leave with any regrets.
Remember her daughter once said that her biggest dream is to marry a boyfriend of the same age, whom she has known since she was 8 years old. After discussions with Emma's boyfriend's family, they decided to have a wedding in the garden for the young couple and invited Emma's teacher to share the touching story.
This is when Alina's mother and DJ get into action, planning a mock wedding. "This idea came to us very quickly. We finished it in less than two days. Everything at the wedding was donated," Alina said of her daughter's "wedding," a garden ceremony attended by about 100 guests.
"The ceremony was very precious, the two children came together very well. My husband has to say that he entrusted his daughter to the DJ. A friend of ours officiated, a friend read a verse from the Bible and her best friend was a bridesmaid," Alina added.
On her wedding day, Emma's mother said: "Most kids dream about going to Disney parks, but Emma wants to get married, become a wife and have three children. I tried to make my daughter's dream come true."
Unlike many other mothers-in-law, Alina has nothing but kind words for her new "son-in-law": "DJ is the sweetest-souled kid I've ever met. He has a heart of gold and really loves Emma," she said.
Alina said Emma was healthy until last year, when she and her husband took her to the doctor after she fell. At this time, doctors discovered a malignant tumor in Emma's leg. "She had never been sick before. Then suddenly, I started falling repeatedly. We accidentally found out. When they arrived at the hospital, doctors examined Emma's leg and found that the cancer cells had become deeply ingrained in her bones, causing them to weaken," Alina said.
It is known that due to her severe illness, Emma was always in a state of drowsiness but she refused to take painkillers so that she could attend the wedding soberly, preserving all images and sounds, not letting any memories be clouded.
Emma's friends and neighbors in the Walnut Cove community have shown their support for her and Edwards' family. Race car drivers at nearby Bowman Grey Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, put "Emma's Army" stickers on their cars at a racing event last month.
The stickers were also sold as a fundraising effort to help the Edwards, Winston-Salem Journal reported.
Finally, before Emma left, she fulfilled her wish to marry her boyfriend of the same age Daniel, extremely content, without any regrets.
