Amber Heard is acting on behalf of legal counsel to appeal the defamation verdict against the plaintiff, Johnny Depp, according to People. Last month, Amber Heard took the necessary step to formally appeal the ruling in Johnny Depp's defamation case against her.
According to legal documents obtained by ET, the Aquaman actress's attorneys at the time of filing on July 21 in Fairfax County, Virginia, notified the court that they would file an appeal. In the original judgment, Johnny Depp was awarded more than $10 million while Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in damages for her counterclaim.
Now, following the court rulings, Amber Heard has chosen a new legal team. She will be represented by David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown of Ballard Spahr as her lead appellate attorney.
"We welcome the opportunity to represent Ms. Heard on this appeal because it is a case of significant significance to the first constitutional amendment for all Americans," Axelrod and Brown said in a statement. "We are confident that the appellate court will apply the law properly without compromising popularity, reverse the ruling against Ms. Heard, and reaffirm the fundamental principles of Freedom of Expression" .
Meanwhile, Ben Rottenborn of Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black will continue to represent Heard as co-advisor, while Elaine Charlson Bredehoft of Bredehoft Cohen Brown & Nadelhaft will step down as attorney.
"I have committed to Amber and her appeals team my full cooperation and support as they move forward on the path towards success," Bredehoft said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Johnny Depp told ET: "The jury listened to the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and came to a clear and unanimous verdict that it is itself. The defendant has defamed Mr. Depp, on many occasions. We remain confident in our case and this judgment will be effective."
Depp filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard in March 2019 after the Washington Post published an article she wrote about being a victim of domestic violence. Depp's name was not mentioned in the article, however, the story emerged as their controversial 2016 divorce continued to make news headlines. After a six-week trial, Depp won the case after the jury unanimously sided with him.
Not long ago in the pre-trial document published by Newsweek and Page Six, the lawyer for the actress Amber Heard (36) argued in a March 2022 filing. that Johnny Depp (59 years old) should disclose that he suffers from erectile dysfunction by submitting a prescription drug list as evidence. They suggested that Depp's condition was "related" to the abuse, which could explain why he used a bottle to sexually assault Amber Heard - something the actor denied. unequivocally admit that it never happened.
"Although Mr. Johnny Depp does not want to reveal his erectile dysfunction, it is completely related to violence, including Mr. Depp getting angry and using a bottle to rape Amber Heard. Mr. Depp's disorder makes it more likely that he will be angry or agitated when confronted with Amber Heard and he has resorted to a bottle," Amber Heard's legal team wrote, according to Newsweek.
The newspaper reported that Johnny Depp's attorneys responded in a filing, bringing up the matter and claiming the actor's ex-wife "wants to do a circus show and clearly intends to bring this trial to the door. unnecessary deadlock, especially given Depp's medical history".
Speaking for the last time in court, Johnny Depp called Heard's testimony "disgusting", "ridiculous" and "insulting". He said in the courtroom: "No human being is perfect, certainly not. None of us. But I have never in my life committed sexual abuse, physical abuse or all of that. weird, outrageous story of me committing these things. I've lived with it for years and waited for the truth to come out."
In a live interview after the verdict, Heard told NBC News reporter Savannah Guthrie that she stood by her testimony and explained why being cross-examined over the sexual assault allegation stress on her. "The scariest thing for anyone who publishes about sexual violence is not being trusted, being called a liar or being humiliated," Heard said.
One of the unnamed male jurors told Good Morning America in June 2022: "Some of the jurors used the phrase 'crocodile tears' to refer to Heard acting emotionally while talking about abuse. used and assaulted in courtrooms and millions of people watching from home." The juror added that they felt Depp was "more believable" and "seemed a little more real".
