Recently, the key subject of the human trafficking group that caused 39 Vietnamese people to suffocate in the back of a truck to the UK in 2019 - Marius Draghici has just been sentenced to 12 years and 7 months in prison for manslaughter.
On October 23, 2019, British police discovered the bodies of 39 victims inside a lorry in Grays industrial park, in Essex (England). Reportedly, among the victims were 31 men and 8 women, aged between 15 and 44. Especially all the victims were Vietnamese.
The cause of death was because the victims were locked inside a locked container at the time the truck took the ferry to the UK. The results of the scene examination showed that some victims used a metal rod in a desperate attempt to puncture the ceiling of the container. The traffickers did this to try to hide the victims on their way to the UK illegally.
The case shocked the world, the atmosphere of trauma covered Vietnam at that time. Investigations by police forces in Belgium, the UK as well as Vietnam have worked tirelessly to find out who is behind the crime.
Recently, Marius Draghici - the next member of the human trafficking group was sentenced to 12 years and 7 months in prison for manslaughter. The defendant is described as the "right-hand man" in the trafficking gang responsible for the deaths of Vietnamese migrants.
British police said Draghici was recruited by fellow Romanian Gheorghe Nica into a human trafficking ring. Draghici fled after the bodies of the Vietnamese victims were discovered. Subject was arrested by police in Romania in August 2022, and returned to the UK for trial.
According to Reuters , Marius Draghici is the eighth person in a group of human trafficking to be convicted by the UK, after seven others linked to the gang were found guilty of murder and received a total of 92 years in prison by 2021.
"28 men, eight women and three children died in agony... as a result of a conspiracy in which the defendant was involved," judge Neil Garnham of the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales told the court. Draghici.
Essex County Police, which is leading the investigation into the deaths, said in a statement that they had promised the families of the 39 victims to bring justice to their loved ones.
We have never forgotten that promise and the members of the investigative team kept their word," said Chief Inspector Stuart Hooper.
According to Mr Garnham, conditions inside the container, where the victims died, were "indescribable", as "there was no ventilation inside, and there was no way to get out. Okay". The victims, including men, women and children aged between 15 and 44, suffocated to death after being locked in an airtight container for nearly 12 hours.
In January of this year, defendant Ronan Hughes, the owner of a trucking company transporting 39 Vietnamese migrants, was ordered to pay compensation to the families of the victims more than £180,000.
The discovery of many deaths in this East London industrial area shocked both British and Vietnamese people. This is also an alarm bell about human trafficking from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, sending them on dangerous journeys to the West.
Previously, on May 25, 2020, Belgian authorities raided a number of locations, mostly in Brussels, to search for suspects related to a human trafficking ring.
Following that, a Belgian court on December 15, 2021, opened a trial for 23 suspects related to the deaths of 39 Vietnamese people in the back of a refrigerated container truck in the UK.
According to the South China Morning Post, the trial lasted for two days, and focused on the details of the truck that left the western suburbs of Brussels (Belgium) on October 22, 2019 for the UK. This is believed to be where the trafficking ring set up two houses to group migrants before departure.
The main defendant in the Belgian trial is a 45-year-old man accused of leading a criminal organization specializing in human trafficking. The defendant faced up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 2 million euros.
