The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has just requested Noi Bai Airport to urgently review service prices after the "208,000 VND bread" incident. This move is aimed at correcting the situation of sky-high prices and protecting passengers' rights.
In recent days, public opinion in Vietnam has been stirred by information about the "sky-high" prices of food services at airports, especially the incident of a sandwich costing up to 208,000 VND at Noi Bai International Airport. The incident, reported in detail by Dan Tri newspaper, has caused a strong wave of indignation among the passenger community and quickly attracted the attention of state management agencies.
Faced with such concerns, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has urgently issued a directive, requesting relevant units to quickly verify, clarify, and resolutely correct violations (if any) to ensure legitimate rights and service quality for passengers at airports.
The incident originated from an article in Dan Tri newspaper on July 5, titled "208,000 VND bread at Noi Bai, passengers complain it is more expensive than at the international airport". The article recorded the experience of a passenger, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Tra My from Ho Chi Minh City, who was extremely surprised when she had to pay 208,000 VND for a bread at Noi Bai airport. Not stopping there, Ms. My also shared about another meal at Tan Son Nhat airport, where she had to spend 560,000 VND for a bowl of pho and a chicken rice dish that she said was "not worth the price".
Ms. My also made a straightforward comparison, pointing out that the prices of food and beverage services at Vietnamese airports are significantly higher than those in other countries such as South Korea, China, Singapore or Indonesia â places where the standard of living and average income of people may be higher than in Vietnam. This further increases the confusion and dissatisfaction among passengers.
The post quickly received attention from everyone, most of whom expressed deep sympathy for Ms. My's experience. Many people did not hesitate to tell similar stories about having to buy food and drinks at exorbitant prices and poor quality at Vietnamese airports. The examples given varied from a bowl of instant noodles costing 50,000 VND, a bowl of chicken pho costing up to 138,000 VND, some people even had to pay 930,000 VND for three bowls of pho, or a cup of black coffee costing "nearly" 200,000 VND.
These comments not only express personal frustration but also raise larger issues about the negative impact on Vietnamâs tourism image. Readers are concerned that price gouging at international gateways such as airports will reduce Vietnamâs attractiveness to foreign tourists, as well as cause difficulties for domestic citizens.
In response to the Dan Tri newspaperâs reflection and public concern, on July 10, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam issued an urgent document, expressing its determination in handling the incident. Accordingly, the Civil Aviation Authority requested Noi Bai Airport to closely coordinate with the Northern Airports Authority to quickly verify and clarify all information related to the article.
Aviation authorities emphasize the need to promptly correct any violations (if any). The ultimate goal is to ensure service quality commensurate with price and protect the legitimate rights of all passengers when using services at the airport.
The Northern Airport Authority is responsible for leading the entire verification process. This unit has the right and responsibility to strictly handle any organizations and individuals who violate the law in accordance with current regulations. At the same time, the Airport Authority must also strengthen inspection and supervision, proactively receive feedback and recommendations from customers and directly resolve these issues quickly and effectively.
Not only stopping at handling specific incidents, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam also requested the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to conduct a comprehensive review of prices of all goods and services being provided at airports, especially food and beverage services. The goal of this review is to ensure that the selling price is not too high compared to the general level of similar goods and services on the market, and more importantly, must be commensurate with the actual quality.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has set a specific deadline for implementation and reporting of results. Relevant units must submit reports to the Authority before 4:00 p.m. on July 11. This shows the urgency and determination of the management agency in resolving this situation once and for all, restoring passenger confidence.
