The horror film "Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua" by director Tran Trong Dan is sweeping the Vietnamese box office, asserting its position as the king right from the early screenings. According to Box Office Vietnam , as of the morning of June 20, the film has earned more than 7.1 billion VND.
The film tells the story of Lan (Phuong Thanh), a poor girl who lives in the mysterious old house of Mr. Danh (Mac Van Khoa). This house contains gold and silver that have been cursed and the soul of a young girl who has not yet been released. The story becomes more terrifying when Son (Quoc Truong), a horror writer, accidentally enters the house and faces strange phenomena while investigating the disappearance of his aunt, Mr. Danh's wife.
"Ut Lan: Oan linh gua cai" has a solid foundation when it is inspired by the legend of "thần bảo tà i" (also known as the ghost gua cai) - an important part of the treasure of Vietnamese folk beliefs. According to folk beliefs, the souls of those who buried their wealth when alive can guard their property after death, causing unpredictable spiritual consequences for anyone who deliberately violates it without careful worship.
The difference of the film lies in the way director Tran Trong Dan evokes fear. Instead of abusing jumpscare or special effects, the film focuses on building a creepy atmosphere, haunting sounds, and dramatic story. The contrast between the peaceful An Giang landscape and the haunted space at night creates a strong visual effect. In particular, the body horror element is also successfully exploited, with haunting images such as the scene of Ut Lan crawling out of a water jar or the "old lady in a red shirt with a hunchback" with a melancholy look, making viewers' "hair stand on end".
The film also impresses with its layered storytelling, not only focusing on the demonic element but also embedding profound messages about karma, spirituality and traditional beliefs. The fear in the film comes not only from the demonic element but also from the karmic greed and the dark side hidden deep within each person.
With a quality cast, from People's Artist Dao Ba Son, Meritorious Artist Duc Khue to Quoc Truong, Mac Van Khoa, Phuong Thanh, Mai Cat Vi... have contributed significantly to the success of the film. Mac Van Khoa especially impressed when he completely "transformed" into the villainous role of Mr. Danh. Breaking away from the familiar humorous image, Mac Van Khoa successfully portrayed a rich, superstitious, and evil boss, haunting the audience with his deep eyes and "evil" expressions that even his mother was surprised.
The actor's mother confessed that she had never seen her son with such "evil" expressions and even felt scared and worried that he would have nightmares after watching the movie. This shows that Mac Van Khoa has played the role excellently, creating a realistic and scary villain.
The audience also gave much praise to Mac Van Khoa's courage and efforts to "transform". Many expressed surprise and delight when seeing him show a completely different side.
Mai Cat Vi, the child star who made a splash in "Hai Phuong" and "Song Lang", continues to prove her maturity in acting. Despite having few lines and appearing rarely, she still makes a strong impression through her eyes filled with resentment and coldness, completely opposite to her previous innocent image. In addition, Phuong Thanh, the Gen Z actress who plays the main role of Ut Lan, also made a strong impression even though this is her first role. She is highly appreciated for her rustic beauty and natural acting style.
The presence of supporting characters such as People's Artist Dao Ba Son, Meritorious Artist Duc Khue, Thanh Thuc also created a solid foundation, effectively pushing the film's climax. The combination of veteran names, actors who have affirmed their talent and promising young faces has helped "Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua" not only be attractive in terms of script but also convincing in terms of acting, creating a harmonious and captivating whole for the audience.
With the blend of experience and youth, between different acting styles, the film is not only an entertaining horror film but also a work highly appreciated for its acting quality, conquering the audience with genuine emotions and impressive transformations.
