After more than 20 years from the death of Empress Dowager Cixi and the time her tomb was looted by the militarists in July 1928, many people were stunned to find that her body was still intact, worth mentioning, her skin was still pink as if she were sleeping.
Empress Dowager Cixi was born in 1835 and became a concubine of Emperor Xianfeng in 1852. After her son Emperor Tongji ascended to the throne, she became empress dowager and gained de facto supremacy during the late Qing Dynasty, which lasted for half a century.
According to historical records, Xu Xi was an extremely lavish, extravagant woman who had mixed opinions about her role in history. Until now, more than 100 years after his death, this character is still the subject of endless debate of posterity.
In July 1928, the tomb of Empress Dowager Cixi was exhumed by Sun Yanying, a warlord of the Republic of China. The gravediggers led by Sun Yanying cleared the jewels around Xu Xi's coffin and burial items in the "feng shui well", Sun Yanying's soldiers tossed out Xu Xi's coffin with hammers and cleaned up the treasures inside. In an officer's "Tale of the Grave Breaking," it reads:
"At that moment, the lid of the coffin opened, the light was bright, and every soldier holding a flashlight rushed forward standing in amazement. Looking at the coffin, the Western Empress Dowager looked like she was alive, clearly visible in her fingers growing white hair an inch long. Treasures are in coffins, big ranks take big things, soldiers take small things. The commanding officer ordered the liturgy to be stripped and the jewels from it..."
In the book "Sun Yingdong Ling Dao" there is a description of Empress Dowager Cixi. The content is written about the Empress Dowager's mouth holding a pearl divided into 2 halves, combined into a sphere. When put together, the pearl emits a green light.
Since then, there have been rumors that the pearl is the secret to helping protect the Empress Dowager's body. Her face when exposed to the air outside began to blacken.
One of the most researchable items was the last one stolen by Sun Yanying, so the rumor has not been verified.
However, archaeologists pay attention to details, the body of the Empress Dowager when exposed to newly oxidized air. This meant that Xu Xi's body was dismembered, but thanks to the sealed coffin, it limited this process. From here, experts questioned the particular type of coffin where her body was located.
According to ancient records, the type of wood used for the coffin was not ordinary wood. This is a particularly rare Southern Jupiter wood. The wood is very solid, fragrant with the characteristic so that it does not rot or deform for as long as it takes.
In addition, to make a coffin for the Empress Dowager, craftsmen also swept 49 layers of oil paint on the outside. The outermost layer is swept with a coat of gold paint. Next, inside the coffin was lined with 13 layers of fabric. Each lining is handcrafted with high sophistication. It can be seen that this is one of the expensive items that bring the Empress Dowager to the "other side of the world".
It was this special coffin that separated the air from Xu Xi's body. But experts continue to ask questions. Does the sealed coffin prevent the body from rotting after about 20 years?
The history books in the palace once recorded that, on the 2nd day after her 74th birthday, Empress Dowager Cixi suffered from severe dysentery, even bleeding one day. A week later, she was thin despite being treated wholeheartedly by the palace doctor. And only 7 days later, the Empress Dowager died. Bacteria in the intestines and stomach are what cause the bodies to rot.
But this dysentery caused the bacteria in the Empress Dowager's intestines and stomach to plummet. The same factor that the coffin is closed, not exposed to outside air are believed to be important reasons why the body has not rotted after 20 years.
In addition, many people who study carefully will find that the reason why the empress dowager's person is famous for not rotting probably stems from a very healthy lifestyle that helps her have excellent health.
Picky from going to the toilet
Empress Dowager Cixi paid special attention to health care, including hygiene. The reason why Xu Xi's body didn't rot and looked as if she was still alive was because the food in her stomach was pushed out after her digestive system shut down. However, Xu Xi's body did not smell rotten, which was due to her careful personal habits when she was alive.
Since there was no fixed toilet in ancient times, whenever Xu Xi wanted to go to the toilet, he would call "providence" (a type of toilet bowl that is not fixed). The Empress Dowager's "providence" is made from fragrant eucalyptus wood, the outside is carved with a large lizard, four legs touching the ground and also the legs of the toilet.
The lizard's mouth is wide open to suck paper, the tail curls up as a handle, the lizard's belly is a container, inside put a lot of clean fragrant wood chips.
Wear high heels that are good for the feet
When Sun Yanying opened the lid of the coffin, he saw that the Empress Dowager's feet were relatively small but wearing a pair of shoes with very high soles. It's a typical Qing Dynasty style of heel with the heel in the middle instead of the back. This type of shoe is made of wood, the outside is covered with intricately embroidered fabrics. Above the toe of the shoe is usually studded with precious stones or gemstones.
Empress Dowager Cixi especially loved this style of shoe because it was not only beautiful, but it also had the effect of taking care of the health of the feet. First of all, it will not deform the foot. Moreover, when wearing this type of shoes, the woman is forced to straighten her back, her feet are drilled, and her whole body exudes gentle decency. If you are in a hurry, you can only take short steps to keep your balance. As a result, Xu Xi always had a gentle walking style.
Take care of the body of each "hairy silk leg"
Empress Dowager Cixi also paid special attention to protecting her skin, hair, and teeth. Although the empress dowager's skin was gray and rough, it gradually became very white and smooth after being maintained according to strict procedures.
Special diet
Xu Xi was known as the empress dowager whose life was extremely luxurious, especially when it came to eating. Particularly, Xu Xi opened a separate bender in the palace including many ministries such as the Point of Ministry, the Tai Tai Ministry, the Goodness Ministry, etc. where famous East-West dishes can do. According to the bending room in the Qing Palace, the kitchen area in the Palace has 108 rooms, spanning 8 courtyards, with 128 people in charge. Each meal of the empress dowager has more than 200 dishes, but in fact she eats very little, the rest is rewarded.
It is possible that thanks to such a lifestyle and elaborate care measures, Xu Xi not only retained her beautiful young beauty when she was older, but her body was also preserved incredibly perfectly.
