Returning after three years, Squid Game 2 (Vietnamese title: Squid Game 2) attracted attention because it gathered more stars than the first part, with names like Yim Si Wan, Kang Ha Neul, Lee Jin Wook, Park Sung Hoon.
However, the person who left the biggest impression was an old face: Gong Yoo. Despite appearing for a short time, the actor's role still captured the audience's attention. He left a strong impression thanks to his mysterious and charismatic demeanor, contributing to the tension and drama of the film.
Squid Game 2 follows the story of protagonist Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) after he wins a death game and wins billions. Instead of enjoying a rich life, Gi Hun is determined to return to the game to break the system behind it.
In the first part, Gong Yoo joined the project as a cameo. He played the recruiter, a mysterious, nameless character introduced at the beginning of the film and playing an important role in attracting players to join the survival game.
Gong Yoo's character approaches the main character at the subway station. He convinces Gi Hun to join the game by inviting him to play a Korean folk game called "ddakji" (paper breaking game) for a prize.
Despite only appearing for a few short minutes, Gong Yoo left a strong impression and became a highlight for Squid Game. The unexpected success of season one also helped Gong Yoo gain more attention from international audiences, even though he was already a shining star in his home country. Fans of the series hope to see the actor return, and the story will also expand the character's role.
Writer and director Hwang Dong Hyuk also responded to the audience's affection by favoring Gong Yoo. In the second part, he appeared with more screen time. The Goblin star was even the character who "steal the show" - capturing the audience's attention, standing out more than the main role of Lee Jung Jae or the villain role of Lee Byung Hun.
In Squid Game 2, Gong Yoo quickly appeared in episode one. His character played a much more important role than before, bringing two simple but thoughtful games.
In the first game, he asked players to choose between bread and a lottery ticket. The participants were poor people, living on the streets without food or clothing.
The second game is Russian Roulette, which is a high-stakes game. A bullet is loaded into a pistol. The player rotates the cylinder to randomly position the bullet, then closes it, points the gun at his head, and pulls the trigger.
Both games have different rules but both revolve around choices. The lottery represents the desire to rise above the odds and the belief in luck, despite the uncertainty of the outcome. Russian roulette challenges the mind in the face of death. But players have the choice to stop or not participate at all.
The harsh nature of the game partly reflects the cruelty and calculation of the character. It is also an impressive introduction from the director, before the audience really enters the harsh world of the film.
Gong Yoo has always been famous for his versatile acting ability, able to handle many different roles, from action, thriller to psychological and romantic films. However, the actor mainly plays positive roles, scoring points with his handsome appearance and masculine style.
This time, Gong Yoo really made a breakthrough when playing the villain in the two parts of Squid Game. He didn't need to show off his acting, nor did he have many lines, but he was still able to portray the character's hatefulness.
From Gong Yoo's eyes, facial expressions to gestures, everything shows the resentment of a person with many hidden corners and unpredictable psychological developments.
Gong Yoo also has a confrontation scene with the main character played by Lee Jung Jae. Both are veteran actors with acting skills, which helps make the scene tense and attractive, bringing a lot of emotions to the film.
When it was released, Squid Game 2 divided critics and audiences alike. The work was criticized for its bland, uninspired script. The new games did not leave much of an impression while the acting of the stars was also controversial. Many of the plots were repetitive and similar to the previous part, making viewers feel bored and lacking in novelty.
