The passing of artist Thuong Tin has left many fans deeply saddened. Recently, the innocent yet heartbreaking words of his youngest daughter, shared before the memorial service, brought many to tears.
Heartbreaking message from a child
Recently, screenwriter Nguyen Thieu Hoang announced that Venerable Thich Tam Ngoc – Abbot of Son Hai Pagoda (Phan Rang, Khanh Hoa) – had invited him to attend a memorial service for the late artist Thuong Tin. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 28th (the 9th day of the 11th lunar month) with the participation of family members and monks from various places to pray according to Buddhist rituals.
Notably, upon hearing the news, Bui Thanh Thao (the late artist's youngest daughter) asked the screenwriter in bewilderment, "Does that mean the temple is holding a 21-day memorial service for my dad, Uncle?" When she learned the purpose of the ceremony, the 12-year-old girl tearfully expressed her wish to be present but her circumstances prevented her from doing so: "I really want to go that day, but my mother doesn't have a car. If you come down, Uncle, please light an incense stick for my dad for me!"
The simple, polite words, yet filled with the pain of loss and the hardship faced by the child, deeply moved those who witnessed the scene. In this situation, many encouraged Thanh Thảo to try to arrange her schedule to attend the ceremony, so that the soul of her deceased father could find warmth and peace.
A brilliant career of a screen "icon".
Artist Thuong Tin passed away, leaving behind a vast artistic legacy, closely associated with the golden age of Vietnamese cinema and theater. Beginning his career in 1978 at the Cuu Long Giang Drama Troupe, he quickly became a prominent figure after his leading role in the film "Nang Do" (1980).
In just one decade (1980-1990), Thuong Tin set an unparalleled record by participating in over 100 films and video productions. His name is associated with classic films that were hugely popular at the time, such as: The Upside Down Card Game, Saigon Commando, Hunting Thieves, The Unforgettable Song, and The Battlefield Divided by Half a Moon.
Not only did he shine on screen, but he was also a "king" of the theater stage with dozens of leading roles in exemplary plays such as "The Soul of Truong Ba in the Body of a Butcher," "Thunderstorm," "Camellia Girl," etc. His versatility and rugged, masculine acting style have captured the hearts of many generations of audiences.
Golden milestones and dedicated service.
Throughout his career, artist Thuong Tin has received a series of prestigious awards, a testament to his outstanding talent: Golden Apricot Blossom Award (1985): Leading role in the film "The Unforgettable Song". Gold Medal (1985): Leading role in the play "The Blind Date". Gold Medal at the National Theatre Festival (1990 & 1995): Particularly for the role of Doctor Tung in the play "Legend of the Mother". Gold Medal at the Theatre Festival commemorating "300 years of the city".
Despite experiencing many ups and downs in his personal life, his dedication to art is undeniable. From his early days graduating from the Saigon National School of Music and Drama to his time with major theater troupes such as Kim Cuong, Thanh Nien, and Thuong Tin, he always fully immersed himself in each role.
The upcoming memorial service at Son Hai Pagoda is not only an opportunity for family and colleagues to bid farewell to him as he departs to the eternal realm, but also a heartfelt tribute to a talented artist who dedicated his entire life to contributing to the national art scene.
When Thuong Tin passed away, only one artist sent flowers, causing outrage among his younger colleagues in the US.
