Stephen Chow's new film, "A Chinese Odyssey" is based on the classic "A Chinese Odyssey" in which he starred in 1995. The film has been heavily criticized and considered a failure compared to the masterpiece.
Stephen Chow's 1995 film "A Chinese Odyssey" created a sensation not only in China but also across Asia. The film, with its mix of humor, romance and timeless dialogues, has become a monument in the hearts of audiences.
Following that success, when a remake version called "A Chinese Odyssey" was released, it received a lot of criticism and failed miserably.
In A Chinese Odyssey, the character Chi Ton Bao (Stephen Chow) revealed that he has a twin brother, and in the new version, the male lead is named Chi Ton Ngoc (Jiang Long). The female lead Nguyet Quang (Zhang Tian Ai) revealed that she is the older sister of Fairy Tu Ha (Chu An). Another detail is that this character has three black dots on his feet, identifying who is the reincarnation of Sun Wukong.
A Chinese Odyssey has 24 short episodes, each about 10 minutes long. Instead of receiving the usual praise for Stephen Chow's works, the film was heavily criticized.
The film's plot revolves around the character Chi Ton Ngoc (Tuong Long), who wants to join a gang but is faced with the challenge of cuttin.g off one of his own arms. However, due to fear, he fakes his deat.h and accidentally falls into the hands of robbers, before being saved by the female knight Nguyet Quang (Truong Thien Ai). Although there are mystical and mythological elements, the situations in the film are not new, easily predictable, making it impossible for the audience to be drawn into the story.
Although Stephen Chow is famous for his unique comedy style and "crazy" lines, in the remake, the humorous elements become forced and fail to make the audience laugh.
The film went further downhill when A Chinese Odyssey was criticized for the poor acting of the cast. Chiang Long, who played the main character, failed to show the charisma and charm that Stephen Chow had in the original version. Although Chiang Long may have had acting ability, his acting style was unnatural, even exaggerated, making it impossible for the audience to feel the character's personality.
Zhang Tian Ai, who plays Yue Guang, also cannot surpass the shadow of her senior Zhou En, who left a strong impression in the 1995 version. Despite her acting ability, her expressions are not convincing enough and cannot create a connection with the audience. The lack of sharpness in the acting of the two main actors has reduced the appeal of the film.
Although this is just a low-budget short film project, many audiences have expressed concern about Stephen Chow remaking A Chinese Odyssey. They believe that simply remaking a work that is too famous without adding anything new will be a failure. Stephen Chow, although a big name in the entertainment industry, remaking classic works without adding innovation will make the film bland and unattractive.
The failure of A Chinese Odyssey is a clear demonstration that remaking a work is not simply copying what already exists, but also requires creativity, respect for the original elements and bringing something new to the audience. When the audience no longer feels the innovation, even big-name works can hardly save the situation.
Although this was a project that was expected to continue the success of A Chinese Odyssey in 1995, it could not overcome the huge shadow of the original version. Lack of creativity, weak acting, and ineffective exploitation of humorous elements prevented the film from winning over the audience.
