The film went further downhill when A Chinese Odyssey was criticized for the poor acting of the cast. Chiang Long, who played the main character, failed to show the charisma and charm that Stephen Chow had in the original version. Although Chiang Long may have had acting ability, his acting style was unnatural, even exaggerated, making it impossible for the audience to feel the character's personality.

Zhang Tian Ai, who plays Yue Guang, also cannot surpass the shadow of her senior Zhou En, who left a strong impression in the 1995 version.
