These islands are not as beautiful as in movies, they contain horror and scary legends. However, there are still people who aspire to conquer and discover the mysteries in these places.
Island of Dolls - Mexico
A few kilometers south of the center of Mexico City, Mexico's capital, is Isla De Las Muñecas, the island of dolls. The island has hundreds, possibly thousands, of dolls hanging from trees in a state of decomposition.
The legend of Don Julian Santana Barrera's dolls is still quite controversial. His relatives believe that the story just to make the image of dolls hanging all over the island more fascinating. Others believe that a girl actually drowned and haunted Barrera until his death.
Whether the scary stories are true or not, the entire island today is still filled with dolls in various states of destruction. Barrera also maintains a cabin filled with accessories for dolls such as shoes, hats and glasses.
As news of the mysterious island began to spread, curious travelers made their way to Barrera's tiny kingdom, where he welcomed them with open arms. The island's sole custodian realized visitors were willing to pay a small fee for a guide, and since then, this exotic spot has gradually become popular. After Barrera was found dead at the same location as the girl 50 years earlier, the island gradually developed into a hot Mexican tourist destination.
Poveglia - haunted island
In the Adriatic Gulf in northeastern Italy, there is an island formed from three small islands, this island is one of the most haunted and scary places in Italy, it is said that more than 50% of the place is made up of human ash and bones.
These skeletons and ashes came from plague victims, prisoners of war, and psychiatric patients. To redevelop the island, the Italian government auctioned off the rights to use the island for 99 years in 2014 but no one has yet stepped forward to buy the island.
The island called Poveglia, located between Venice and Lido Island, covers an area of about 68,000 square meters and consists of three islands. Two of the three islands are naturally formed, of which one is entirely vegetation, the other is mostly buildings, while the third is an octagonal artificial island created from wooden piles and layers of soil.
For centuries, this place was used as a quarantine point for epidemics, prisoners of war camps and hospitals for mental patients, it is said that the mental patients of that time faced unfair treatment, they even had to become experimental subjects.
North Sentinel - The most dangerous island in the world
North Sentinel Island or Sentinel Island is an island of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal. It is inhabited by the indigenous Sentinel people, a tribe that refuses, sometimes violently, any contact from the outside world. Therefore, this is also considered one of the most dangerous places in the world that tourists cannot set foot in.
This comes from the fact that people living on North Sentinel Island insist on not interacting with the modern world even though many people come with peaceful goodwill. Typically, Sentinel tribe members will use bows and arrows or throw stones at any outsider who intends to go to the island. There are even a few documented cases of being killed by this tribe when intending to approach their habitat. According to some records, the Sentinel tribe once took the lives of two men who were fishing illegally near their island in 2006.
Later, authorities and expert groups dropped friendship gifts such as food near the coast on North Sentinel Island to avoid conflict with the hostile tribe.
Snake Island - Sao Paolo
Located about 93 kilometers from downtown Sao Paulo, off the coast of Brazil, is an island called Ilha da Queimada Grande, also known as "Snake Island."
The island has an elevation of 206 meters above sea level, has a very small area, about 43 hectares. The climate here is very mild, no different from the neighboring island of Nimer. The island has a wide variety of vegetation and its terrain is also very diverse.
According to Marcelo Duarte, a curious biologist who has the courage and audacity to visit Snake Island more than 20 times, the claim of having between one and five snakes per square meter is a bit of an exaggeration. The actual number is probably just one snake per square meter, but this is also a staggering number.
Queimada Grande Island is home to the golden spear-headed snake, a venomous and ferocious tiger snake. However, this island also possesses hundreds of other venomous snakes.
The island is currently home to about 430,000 golden spearheaded cobras, but recent estimates suggest that the number is declining.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species asserts that the yellow spearhead cobra is critically endangered due to their low overall numbers. It is also included in the list of threatened species in Brazil.
