Korean media outlets have been reporting extensively on the latest developments in the lawsuit between HYBE and former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin. The focus this time is on Min Hee Jin's submission to the court of text messages exchanged between her and V, a member of the group BTS.
According to the published content, the court accepted these text messages as valid evidence, showing that there was "an opinion that ILLIT has similarities to NewJeans." In the quoted conversation, V texted Min Hee Jin: "There's always plagiarism, it never doesn't happen. Sigh... That's right. I watched it too and thought, 'Ah, this is so similar.'" This wording led the public to speculate that the singer was expressing agreement with Min Hee Jin's stance on the suspicion that "ILLIT copied NewJeans."
However, shortly afterward, V directly addressed the issue on his personal Instagram account. He posted a screenshot of the related article and explained: "That was just part of a casual conversation between me and an acquaintance, where we were both expressing empathy. I didn't intend to agree with or take sides with anyone." The singer stated that he felt confused that the private conversation was included in the court proceedings without his consent.
Following V's statement, his management company, Big Hit Music, also released an official statement. A company representative emphasized: "V's message only expressed empathy in a private conversation, not agreement with any specific statements made by Min Hee Jin. The artist is also unhappy that the content of their personal exchange was used as evidence in court proceedings without their consent."
The incident quickly sparked much debate among fans. Some argued that using private messages as legal evidence could damage an artist's image, especially when the quoted content is only a portion of a longer conversation. Meanwhile, others believed that the court's acceptance of the conversation indicated a certain relevance to the case.
Prior to the dispute with HYBE, Min Hee Jin was the CEO of ADOR, the management company of the group NewJeans under the conglomerate. She also served as the overall producer for V's debut solo album "Layover," released in 2023. In this project, Min Hee Jin oversaw various aspects such as music, visuals, design, and promotion, contributing to the album's distinctive retro style.
After V enlisted, the two maintained contact. In several previous interviews, Min Hee Jin praised V, calling him a great source of encouragement during the difficult times she faced at HYBE. She also revealed that V sent her messages to check on her when she was going through tough times and didn't forget to wish her a happy birthday early, even while serving in the military.
Min Hee Jin won her lawsuit regarding her stock option rights at HYBE after resigning as internal director of ADOR. According to the court ruling, HYBE must pay approximately 25.6 billion won to repurchase the shares, of which about 22.5 billion won belongs to Min Hee Jin. This decision is seen as a significant turning point in the long-running legal battle between the two parties.
Danielle (NewJeans) was fired from the company for shocking reasons, Hanni returned to the group.
