Controversy is currently raging within the global Kpop fan community after IFPI announced its list of the 20 best-selling albums globally in 2025, but Jennie's name was conspicuously absent from the list.
According to pure album sales statistics (including physical albums and full downloads), 13 out of 20 positions are occupied by Kpop artists. These include Stray Kids, Seventeen, ENHYPEN, TXT, ZEROBASEONE, IVE, G-Dragon, NCT Wish, aespa, and BoyNextDoor. This overwhelming number once again confirms Kpop's strong commercial position in the international music market.
However, what particularly caught netizens' attention was the absence of "Ruby"—Jennie's solo album, scheduled for release on March 7, 2025. Previously, many reputable international publications such as The Hollywood Reporter and Hits Daily Double had reported that "Ruby" had reached 1 million copies sold in its first week of release. By September 2025, some large fan accounts even spread figures claiming the album had reached 1.4 million copies.
However, in IFPI's ranking of top net sales for 2025, IVE's album "IVE Secret" ranked 20th with 1.07 million copies. This raises the question: if "Ruby" truly surpassed 1 million copies in its first week, is there any reason why the album couldn't surpass 1.07 million copies after the remaining nine months of the year?
From then on, some viewers began to suspect that Jennie's management company had "inflated" the first-week sales figures. Some pointed out that the initial article about the 1 million album milestone used the phrase "shipped" instead of "sold." In the music industry, "shipped" may only indicate the number of albums shipped to stores, and doesn't necessarily accurately reflect the number of albums that reached end consumers.
Conversely, Jennie's fans quickly spoke up in her defense. They argued that her absence from IFPI's year-end list could be due to technical factors in the data compilation process. According to this argument, if the record label or partners reporting data to IFPI did not fully account for the global sales of "Ruby," the final figures could be incomplete, resulting in the album not making it into the Top 20.
However, the long-standing reputation of IFPI – an organization operating since 1933 and considered the benchmark for global music sales statistics – makes these questions even more sensitive. IFPI's annual rankings have always been trusted by professionals and the media. Therefore, the discrepancy between previous reports and the official 2025 list is causing public division. To date, Jennie, her record label, and her management company have not issued any official response to this controversy.
In other news, in the ranking of the 20 best-selling albums globally in 2025 across all formats (including physical albums, downloads, and free and paid streaming), Kpop has 5 representatives. The soundtrack album "Kpop Demon Hunters" ranked 3rd; Stray Kids' "Karma" ranked 6th; Seventeen's "Happy Burstday" was at 12th; ENHYPEN's "Desire: Unleash" ranked 16th; and Rosé's "Rosie" held the 19th position.
