Recently, the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control announced the test results for Kera vegetable candy products marketed by Chi Em Rot Group Joint Stock Company.

However, it is noteworthy that the Testing Institute discovered that this product contained Sorbitol - a sweetener with a content of 33.4 g/100g but was not listed on the product label as prescribed. In response to the above violation, the Food Safety Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Department and the Dak Lak Provincial Health Department to handle it in accordance with the law.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Thinh - former lecturer at the Institute of Biotechnology and Food, Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that Sorbitol is a popular sweetener, often used in pharmaceuticals to make the medicine sweet and easy to drink. In addition, Sorbitol is also used in medicine as a laxative to treat constipation symptoms, because it belongs to the group of osmotic laxatives. In addition, this compound also has the effect of retaining moisture, creating texture for food, supporting oral health and digestion.

However, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Thinh emphasized: "Sorbitol is a non-calorie sweetener that does not cause fat but is also not beneficial to health. For food, consumers should prioritize beneficial substances. Therefore, Sorbitol is not recommended for use in daily foods."

Talking about fiber supplementation, the factor that Kera vegetable candy promotes, Associate Professor Thinh affirmed that there are many ways to supplement fiber for the body naturally and effectively.

"The best source of fiber comes from green vegetables, tubers, and fresh fruits. According to nutritional recommendations, each person needs to consume an average of 300g of green vegetables and 100g of fruit per day to ensure the necessary amount of fiber for the body." He also added that for those who cannot eat vegetables, they can still supplement fiber with fruit, or simply from familiar foods like rice.

The fact that Kera candy does not declare Sorbitol on the product label has raised big questions about the transparency in the functional food business.
