Immediately after being elected by the Central Committee to hold the position of General Secretary of the XIII Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Comrade To Lam - General Secretary, President, chaired a press conference with domestic and international reporters.

Speaking at the press conference, General Secretary and President To Lam shared about the great and irreparable losses of our Party, nation and people when General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong died. At this moment, the whole Party, the whole people, our entire army and international friends are still very emotional, and have not yet expressed infinite grief for our exceptionally outstanding leader. However, in the face of the urgent requirements and tasks of the Party and the State in building and developing the country and taking care of the people's lives, the Politburo and the Central Executive Committee have decided to consolidate the leadership positions of the Party and the State, first of all, the title of General Secretary of the Party Central Committee.

"This is an urgent requirement of the Party and the country today to ensure the leadership role and successfully implement the goals of the 13th Congress of the Party; preparing for party congresses at all levels to the 14th Congress of the Party; creating a solid foundation to achieve the strategic goals of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; at the same time, determine the future vision, bring Vietnam shoulder to shoulder with the five continental powers, contribute to peace and development in the world", Comrade To Lam emphasized, and said that the election of the title of General Secretary in the middle of the term is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Party Charter, orientation of personnel work of the XIII Party Central Committee and regulations on the Party's cadre work. This is also not a new problem, in the history of our Party, we have also elected a mid-term General Secretary for Comrade Truong Chinh, Comrade Le Kha Phieu.

According to the General Secretary and President To Lam, the process of preparing and introducing the General Secretary's personnel is carried out strictly, in accordance with the principles, fully meeting the standards, titles and processes according to the Party's regulations. The Politburo and the Central Committee discussed democratically, thoroughly, considered many aspects and showed a very high degree of unity in introducing and electing the title of General Secretary of the XIII Party Central Committee. "Being trusted and introduced by the Politburo, the Party Central Committee is trusted to elect and assign the responsibility of the General Secretary, I am deeply aware that this is a great honor, and at the same time a glorious responsibility before the Party, the State and the People; in front of the tradition of their fathers and the heroic history of the nation's thousand-year civilization; before the previous generations of leaders; to the requirements of successfully implementing the line of renewal and building socialism in our country", Comrade To Lam shared.

General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that he will always be consistent and creatively apply and develop Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh Thought, the goal of national independence, socialism and the Party's innovation line; ensure the highest national and national interests; wholeheartedly and wholeheartedly serving the Fatherland, serving the People, taking the happiness of the People as joy and reason for life; take full and deep care for the people's life. Socio-economic development is the center, Party building is the key, cultural development is the spiritual foundation, ensuring national defense and security is important and regular; combine national strength with the strength of the times, maximize internal resources, take advantage of external resources, in which endogenous resources and human resources are the most important.

General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that we will continue to lead the whole Party, the whole people and the entire army to drastically and effectively implement the major orientations and strategic breakthroughs set out by the 13th Congress of the Party. "Perhaps there is nothing like solidarity and unity. Solidarity and unity are our strength. I am very glad that the solidarity and unity from within the Party, the Politburo, and the Central Executive Committee have been spread, continue to promote and arouse well. This is the strength of the Party and the country so that we can overcome many difficulties and challenges and achieve new victories," said the General Secretary and President.
