Despite the impressive revenue of nearly 30 billion VND after only a few days of release, Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua has received a series of "picking out flaws" in the film. Regardless of the script or the film's logic.
Building a script without a beginning or an end
In general, the audience commented that the film was not successful in the script building stage. Especially the dialogue and post-production stage. The plot in the film changes scenes like flipping through a notebook, without beginning or end. The dialogue is disconnected from the flow of emotions, the characters talk to each other as if two people are entering the airport together but each is in a... different terminal. The situation where the audience still has to go on social networks to ask what they just watched is quite common.
The audience's controversy surrounding the appearance of a third entity at the end of the film shows that the crew did not explain the background of each character. Although this may have been the director's intention, but making the audience guess to the point of changing the logic of the film, it is too much.
The question the audience is asking is who is the third entity? Besides Ut Lan (Mai Cat Vi), does the sacrificial ritual also accommodate other souls? Or is this Ut Nho who has passed away, but if it is Ut Nho, it will contradict the hypothesis that Lan (Phuong Thanh) is the reincarnation of Ut Nho.
The 'fatal' question about logic?
Some viewers wondered why Son (Quoc Truong) agreed to stay in a room containing a coffin? This was truly a fatal question for the filmmakers. What region's custom allows people to comfortably sleep in a room containing a coffin?
Unfortunately, Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua has inserted quite a few hidden details in the film. However, it also leaves out a lot of errors. This situation is quite a dilemma. Because you have to watch carefully to find the hidden details, but at the same time, the viewer will also see the errors.
Despite investing in images and having the ambition to tell stories about Vietnamese spiritual culture, Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua still has unnecessary negative points that waste its efforts.
The film revolves around the famous legend of the ghost guarding the house.
The movie "Ut Lan: Oan linh tro cai" exploits folk beliefs to elevate the script, instead of focusing on scare tactics.
The work is inspired by the legend of ghosts kept in the Southwest region, directed by Tran Trong Dan.
The film revolves around Lan (played by Phuong Thanh), a country girl who comes to apply for a job as a cook for Mr. Danh (Mac Van Khoa) - an eccentric man whose wife has just tragically passed away.
Here, Lan faces many strange phenomena, as well as gradually uncovers the terrifying secret of a creepy entity called the Guardian God.
Indigenous culture and the tragedy of greed
The film opens in a poor rural village in the West in 1999, where the sound of insects, the whistling wind, and judgmental looks become the materials that create fear. Not noisy, not rushed, director Tran Trong Dan chooses a calm way of telling with long silences, making each scene chilling.
One of the most obvious plus points of Ut Lan: Oan linh chua cuu is the choice of a local theme - ma chua cuu - associated with the custom of burying wealth with the deceased and nurturing the soul, helping the family prosper. Not following the industrial jumpscare model, the filmmaker uses a slow tempo, symmetrical composition, cold color tones and low light to build a gloomy atmosphere.
At the same time, the image of the ghost bride with a red brocade dress and a deformed hump on her back makes the film cross over into the body horror genre - which is a difficult segment. Throughout the film, the audience often frowns when witnessing the journey of an innocent person who, because of being cursed, gradually changes shape in pain. The deformity is not only to shock, but is also associated with a religious meaning: A good soul is deformed by greed.
The message about karma due to greed is not new, but director Tran Trong Dan presents it meticulously. Compared to the previous film, Anonymous (an action film starring Kieu Minh Tuan), Tran Trong Dan has made some changes in the way he exploits the theme and shapes his filmmaking style.
