The movie 'Ut Lan: Oan linh chua cu' has just been released and has attracted a lot of attention from the audience, when it was adapted from a legend circulating in the Southwest region. Besides the somewhat new story, the plot of the movie was criticized by fans as too old, predictable and not arousin.g curiosity.
The horror film "Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua", inspired by the legend of a ghost in the Southwest region, directed by Tran Trong Dan, is becoming a ho.t topic of discussion after its release.
Although praised for exploiting indigenous themes and not abusing jumpscare, the film still faced many controversies about the film's plot, the acting of some actors and the logic of the script, causing the audience to be divided into many opinions.
One of the biggest problems that "Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua" encounters is the pacing of the film. Many viewers commented that the beginning and middle of the film are too long, with many heavy expository dialogues, lacking a reasonable pace. This makes the viewing experience sometimes slow, easily frustrating for viewers, especially with a genre that requires drama and appeal like horror.
Furthermore, the logic of the script is not really tight. Some key situations, such as the journey to discover the secret of the Guardian God or the motives of the characters, are explained sketchily, making the story line forced and unconvincing. The stuffing of a few supernatural details or "twists" without a reasonable foundation has significantly reduced the effect of surprise and horror. The audience is hardly convinced by these details when they appear suddenly and lack connection with the overall story.
The ending of the film, although carrying the meaning of karma due to greed - a message that is not new but was expressed quite carefully by director Tran Trong Dan - was considered quite gentle and predictable. The lack of explosion necessary for a work labeled T18 (not for audiences under 18 years old) made many viewers feel disappointed. Although the film made efforts to build a gloomy atmosphere with a slow pace, symmetrical composition, cold color tones and low light, the limitations of the script significantly reduced the weight of the work.
The fact that a content creator like Phuong Thanh was given the lead role in a horror film was a surprise to many viewers. The actress born in 2001 does not possess skillful acting skills, but she has a good sense of the camera and restraint in her acting. However, the performances of other actors also caused many mixed opinions.
Mac Van Khoa has a remarkable "transformation" when playing a villain for the first time. No longer the familiar comedic face, he portrays a scheming man, gentle on the outside but vicious and unpredictable on the inside. Although he still lacks flexibility in facial expressions, his restraint and meaningful eyes help the character maintain the necessary weight.
On the contrary, Quoc Truong plays a genuine young writer, completely different from his usual "bad bo.y" image on screen. However, this role does not give him the opportunity to "explode". Son's character's journey is still fragmented and has few climaxes, making him quite bland throughout the film. More regrettably, in the end, the character he plays does not contribute much to the story, even though he is almost side by side with the female lead in the journey to discover the secret, causing confusion about the role of this character.
The presence of the two sisters Mai Cat Vi and Mai My Ngan also brings many nuances to the film, although their screen time is not much. Cat Vi - who has been familiar to the audience for acting in the horror genre since childhood - this time has not had the opportunity to fully demonstrate her abilities. Her character is limited to a few key scenes, but lacks a clear psychological foundation, making her acting not as strong as expected. Meanwhile, Mai My Ngan, with her innocent expression and eyes always hiding fear, has brought a more vivid and sympathetic character.
