Desire is a BL drama that is causing a stir when it exploits the new "EABO universe" where men can get pregnant. The detail of the male lead Alpha being marked by Enigma and getting pregnant right in the first episodes shocked the audience, creating a wave of controversy.
On the evening of July 12, the BL drama Desire The Series, adapted from the novel of the same name by author Long Gian, officially aired and immediately took social media by storm. With the participation of young actors Hoang Tinh, Khau Dinh Kiet, Giang Hanh and Ly Phai An, Desire quickly became the center of discussion among the BL drama-loving community.
Shocking detail: ALPHA was marked, and suddenly got pregnant!
Even before its broadcast, Them Muon was already a name that attracted attention thanks to its unique script and was expected to be a formidable opponent of Nghich Ai, a BL drama that was also airing. However, while Nghich Ai still followed the familiar old pattern, Them Muon embarked on a new genre called "EABO universe" with the highlight being the plot of a pregnant man appearing for the first time on the small screen. This is the factor that created a wave of controversy but also attracted strong curiosity from the audience.
In the film, the main character Hua Yong (played by Huang Xing) is an Enigma and the mysterious boss of the X Holdings corporation, which possesses the most advanced technology in human gender research. He develops feelings for the S-class Alpha and young businessman Sheng Shaoyu (played by Qiu Dingjie). To approach him, Hua Yong disguises himself as an Omega.
Right in the trailer and the first 3 episodes that were broadcast, the scene where Thinh Thieu Du was marked by Hoa Vinh and became pregnant shocked the audience. This was the first time a BL film brought the element of a pregnant man to the screen, receiving mixed responses.
Many people think that Desire is a bold move in exploiting the EABO world, which is popular in Chinese BL novels but has never been realized in a movie. The combination of fantasy, romance and pregnancy has created a new color, completely different from the usual BL movies. However, there are also many people who find it difficult to accept the fact that men are pregnant, thinking that the script is somewhat illogical and beyond the limit of tolerance.
However, it cannot be denied that Them Mong is having a very high level of discussion with a series of related keywords continuously reaching the top search results after airing. Viewers who love unique genres are very interested in the development of the film, especially the detail of Hoa Vinh taking on the identity of Enigma and the role of "breaking the order" in the new gender world.
"Beautiful but not good" cast: Lifeless eyes, stereotyped expressions
As a heavily invested BL drama, Them Mong spared no effort in casting actors. The actors all possess outstanding looks, consistent with the character image in the original work. However, their acting is a minus point that makes the audience not really satisfied.
Hoang Tinh plays Hoa Vinh, who has the appearance of a "cold boss" but because he has only been acting for 3 years, there are still many scenes that lack emotion and have lifeless eyes. Thinh Thieu Du, played by Khau Dinh Kiet, is not much better. Although he has participated in many previous projects, his expressions in Them Mong are still criticized as stereotyped and lacking depth. Giang Hanh, who plays Tham Van Lang, has just started acting, so it is difficult to avoid revealing his weaknesses. Ly Phai An (playing Cao Do) is the only one who is highly appreciated for his acting thanks to his 6 years of experience and natural, role-appropriate performance.
Opening a new era for BL movies?
Although still controversial, it cannot be denied that Them Mong is opening a new direction for the BL genre. The combination of science fiction, biology and romance makes the film a "rare" in the market, especially with young audiences who like breakthroughs. If the film's rhythm is maintained and the acting in the following episodes is improved, Them Mong is completely capable of becoming a new "BL phenomenon", even starting a trend of producing films in the EABO universe in the future.
