According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, in the first 3 days of release (from September 20 to 22), the film earned more than 48 billion VND with more than 545,000 tickets sold and 13,416 screenings. Calculating total revenue up to 8:00 a.m. on September 23, the film has surpassed the 50 billion VND revenue mark.
This number completely overwhelms the newly released Hollywood animated film Transformer: One, with revenue of only nearly 2.5 billion VND and a very limited number of screenings, just over 1,500.
Previously, Cam had set impressive records. On the first day of its release, the film attracted more than 200,000 viewers to the cinema. The film also reached 110,968 pre-sale tickets, the highest in the history of horror films. With the current acceleration, many experts in the industry predict that this will be the third consecutive horror film of Vietnamese cinema to reach the revenue mark of 100 billion VND, after Ma da and Getting rich with ghosts.
The content of Cam revolves around the main character Cam (played by Lam Thanh My) who was born with a deformed face and was rejected by her family and villagers. Only Tam ( Rima Thanh Vy), her half-sister, was always there to comfort and protect her.
However, the real incident happened when Bach Lao (Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy) - a supernatural evil force appeared, turning everything upside down, causing horrible deaths in the village.
Previously, when sharing about the decision to make a horror version of Cam based on the famous fairy tale, producer Hoang Quan said: "With Cam, we want to explore with the audience a new perspective on a fairy tale on the big screen, as well as once again bring Vietnamese cultural materials closer, strange yet familiar to audiences at home and abroad."
The crew also aims to exploit dark, mysterious corners and bring a unique horror experience to the audience, especially young audiences, through careful investment in the character system, a horror world imbued with Vietnamese culture with impressive settings and a cast with convincing acting.
The film scores points with a logical, layered story with unexpected twists for the audience.
The costumes for the main and supporting cast to the extras were invested in and very Vietnamese. The makeup for the characters was also quite impressive. The acting of the actors in the film was mostly good, in which the biggest highlight belonged to Lam Thanh My with her surprising transformation and transformation.
However, the film still created certain controversies in the script, especially when the ending was quite quick, and was made in the form of an animated film. This could later be explained when the producer revealed that they would make a part 2 called Hoang Cung Di Truyen, focusing on the period after Tam married the prince. In addition to the film version, the producer also collaborated with many brands to create accompanying items such as: moon cakes, game cards, perfumes or unique fashion photos.
The film was well-designed but the script was too big and had many illogical details. The ending disappointed many viewers when the director chose to solve the problem with an animated scene.
Tran Huu Tan, 41, started his career as a TVC director. His first film - Bac Kim Thang (2019) - was selected for the A Window on Asian Cinema section (for outstanding films by Asian directors) at the Busan Festival (Korea). The work earned 40 billion VND when released domestically. His second film Rung The Menh (2021) exploited the survival theme, telling the story of a backpacker who got lost in Ta Nang Phan Dung. His third film Chuyen Ma Near Home earned 58 billion VND, making it one of the high-grossing Vietnamese projects in 2022. In 2023, his film Ke An Hon earned nearly 67 billion VND, according to Box Office Vietnam.
