On the morning of November 24, the Thai Institute of Forensic Science raided the Bangkok Detention Center and discovered a secret room. This room is suspected to be a "VIP prison cell" for a group of Chinese criminals, making the police panic because of the secret behind it.
20 Officials Under Investigation: Privileges for Chinese Prisoners
Police Lieutenant Colonel Prawut Wongsinin, director-general of the Department of Corrections, made the shocking announcement after an inspection visit to the prison in Chatuchak district on Saturday (November 22), accompanied by Justice Minister Rutthapon Naowarat.
Lieutenant Colonel Prawut said he received information about the misconduct of prison staff just a month after his appointment on October 1. After nearly three weeks of collecting evidence, he confirmed that about 20 officials, including senior and junior officials, were complicit in violating regulations and providing special privileges to Chinese prisoners.
This misconduct did not stop at providing personal comforts. The investigation uncovered evidence of Chinese women entering the facility, in addition to visiting, to provide sexual services, an unprecedented serious misconduct.
"Secret" room and incriminating evidence
The scandal culminated in a surprise raid on November 16. Investigators found two women in their early twenties in the prison. One was found alone with a Chinese prisoner in a secret room, and the other was waiting upstairs.
Lt Col Prawut said it took authorities a while to enter the room because it was protected by two locked doors. The two women were found fully dressed and both denied involvement in the clandestine operation when questioned.
However, the evidence found in the secret room has exposed wrongdoing. In addition, the previous raid also discovered prohibited amenities such as mobile phones, lighters, portable air conditioners, refrigerators and microwaves. These items prove that Chinese prisoners have long received illegal privileges.
CCTV evidence deleted and Prime Minister's pledge
Lt Col Prawut said CCTV footage examined during the investigation showed that Chinese women were entering the prison every Sunday. However, he also revealed that some of the footage had been deleted, suggesting complicity and attempts to cover up the illegal acts by the officials involved. Forensic officers will examine the scene on November 24 to collect more evidence.
The two women found in the raid have since returned to China as Thai police do not have the authority to immediately detain them as the facts are unclear. However, Thai authorities will work with their Chinese counterparts to blacklist them if they are found to be involved in criminal activities.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul immediately pledged tough action against any and all officials involved. The Department of Rehabilitation has transferred some Chinese prisoners from this prison to a more suitable facility and is continuing its investigation to put an end to this shocking corruption scandal.
